The spirit of STRANGE SPIRITS is the spirit of the dithyramb, the song of Dionysos, the song at the crossroad where tragedy and comedy have not yet diverged, the song which at once instructs and deranges. H. Jeremiah Lewis is the prime modern dithyrambist, a poet and a hierarch of the always-future-king Zagreus, lonely leader of the always-dispersed-and-ever-reconstituting troop of the night-raving bacchants from his phantom citadel in Eugene, the city of "noble births", obviously itself a euphemism alluding to the mysterious double birth of his God, the two doors some say gives to the dithyramb itself its name. But the doors in STRANGE SPIRITS are myriad, as many as the doors of the night.
