Hawkwind founder and leader Dave Brock has finally issued a new solo work. Strange Dreams & Pipe Dreams is his first
solo work since the `80s and was worth the wait. Though, this CD sounds alot like Hawkwinds' music, one must remember
that Brock is the head warrior behind the band and its nice to hear him behind the controls and cruisin' the outer limits and
infinite depths of space alone this time. Among the starlights is a pastoral churchly space remake on the Hawkwind classic
"Space Is Deep" this time around simply titled "Space". "Bosnia" opens with some meticulous charming acoustic guitar and then
blasts into the ugliness of warfare which Brock reflects in spoken poetry against backdrops of gunfire and crazed laughing that
is suddenly smoldered over with some attractive cathedral soundscapes of keyboards. All in all this is a well rounded effort of
new music and will satisfy the hungry psychedelic appetite of Hawkfans everywhere. This is one PSYCHEDELIC WARLORD
that has not disappeared in smoke!

*************Personnal
Dave Brock: Vocals, Guitars, Sequencers, Synthesizers, Drum Machines

*************Technical Stuff
You should have no issues with sound quality: good recording, mixing, and mastering on this one.

**************The Music
Demos are by their very nature a mixed bag, and when an album has the 'demo' tag it is kind of like getting beta software in that your expectations have to be different. So it is no surprise that some tracks work here and some don't. I'll go through a few in a moment. The sound of the album is basic home made synth music circa 90-95, with a smattering of guitar. So you get the machine precise simple drum tracks, the somewhat cheesy machine precise sequenced elements, cheesy keyboards, some audio samples from tv and movies, the occasional lyric, and Dave's great psych guitar.

This is immediately evidenced by the opener Hearing Aid Test with a simple electronic approximation of a tribal rhythm. Next is the white zone, with a sample from Airplane! (the movie) explaining what the white zone is for, ambient synths, and some nice guitar improv. An experimental track follows that combines acoustic and electric guitars with off the wall synth elements.

A synth only melancholic loop is Pipe Dream, simple but effective. Jazz combines with techno digeridoo on Somethings Going On. Bosnia comes soon, which is a political Bruce Coburn kind of track, lamenting the then current Bosnian crisis.

The other tracks all have their own quirky and inventive angles. The only one I really did not like was "It's Never Too Late", as I found its incessantly repeated 2 note bass track really annoying.

************************Summary
"Strange Trips & Pipe Dreams" is a strange little curio.

I bought this album 2 years ago and I've played it dozens of times. Like all Hawkwind albums, you'll discover something new in it every time you listen to it.

There are some of Brock's most listenable songs on this, overall a strong album by him.
Fans of Hawkwind won't be disappointed. From a semi-unplugged version of 'space' to an ambiant 'encounters'; classic Hawwindish 'you burn me up' and 'white zone' to an atmospheric 'U.F.O. line'; there is a good compilation of space rock here.

I find this would be necessary for any Hawkwind collectors.

This was the very first Dave Brock solo CD I ever got - as I remember getting it nearly twenty years ago when it first was released on the Griffin Music label. It's been reissued a couple of times since then. This thirteen track disc appears to be part techno (really, a matter of opinion) and part space rock. Tunes on this CD that most certainly were great to re-live and experience again were the seven-minute "White Zone", the unplugged rendition of "Space" (originally known to old school Hawkfans as "Space Is Deep"), "Bosnia", "Parasites Are Here On Earth", "Gateway" and the truly incredible "It's Never Too Late". Be sure to check out Brock's other solo offerings like 'Memos And Demos' and his latest 'Looking For Love In The Lost Land'. A nice find.
