Book Description

May 15, 2005
A Strange World is an intriguing and comprehensive guide to autistic spectrum disorders presented from a new scientific perspective. Delfos's biopsychological model provides a strong theoretical analysis of the nature of autism and what problems it can cause. She offers practical advice on how to approach these problems from the various perspectives of autistic children, adolescents and adults, as well as parents and carers of autistic people. Balancing theory and practice, Delfos incorporates the findings of current research, and moves beyond. She addresses issues such as differences between men and women with autistic spectrum disorders, and the question of what is 'normal', illustrating her points with many real life examples. A Strange World is both an accessible resource for parents and an important textbook for students and professionals.

I ordered this book once we learned that our child has PDD NOS. I read it cover to cover and it helped me understand my child's situation, and it comforted me a lot. It taught me to accept the limitations, and respect them. I wish you all great health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good academic book, June 24, 2009
This review is from: A Strange World - Autism, Asperger's Syndrome And Pdd-nos: A Guide For Parents, Partners, Professional Carers, And People With Asds (Paperback)
This was a very good help to me writing my thesis on design for autism. The language of this book is very academic. I found it more helpful than other books because the writer doesn't just inform the reader about the history of autism, different differentiations, medical views and theories but also present a theory that attempts to combine the three important theories about autism. and in my opinion the writer succeeds in her attempt to a good extent. She presents an alternative point of view in explaining autism and the challenges people have. Also the use of the different stories and examples in the book makes the theoretical character of the book easier to digest. If you are writing an academic paper on autism then this would be one of the books I would recommend reading. Also the chapter on the differences between men and women brains was not only informative but I found it fun to read and learn about the differences!
