Grade 6 Up-- A relatively new (the vents were first identified in 1977) and unusual area of study that is of immense interest to the scientific community. Fodor presents well-organized coverage of the geology and biology of this fascinating undersea phenomenon and describes the unique life forms that result. The science is complex and requires careful and thoughtful reading of the material. Helpful diagrams amplify and expand such concepts as plate tectonics, the mid-ocean ridge, and the precipitation of minerals from the heated sea water of these vents. Some of the black-and-white photographs are blurry and nondistinct, but they illustrate this special environment and the unusual tools and methods scientists need in such a setting.
