Energetic Melodic Hardcore Done Right, April 15, 2011
This review is from: Stranger (Audio CD)
Nothing gets me moving more than melodic hardcore done right and Ambitions' Stranger contains that extra dynamic spark that separates it from the rest.
Stranger is hands down one of the most exciting hardcore releases my ears have heard this year (and really, was there any doubt considering Ambitions contains members of the equally exciting With Honor). I've read countless reviews stating that Stranger is boring and bland, but I disagree. The album might not contain that stiff edginess found on With Honor's releases, but every song on Stranger is as energetic as the next. Even though the release is void of a lot of aggressive shouted vocals, it does showcase familiar hardcore elements like anthemic backing gang vocals and tight melodies.
A handful of tracks are mid-paced however it doesn't slow Stranger's momentum. As picky as I am, I found Ambitions' first full-length a huge surprise especially when it came to vibrant tracks like "Losing Control" and "The Illusion." Sure they contain hints of Ignite (minus the over-the-top vocals) but they pack in more melodic elements than the veterans. Fans of contemporaries like Crime In Stereo and Rise Against will be intrigued. I'm definitely hooked.
