Book Description

August 2009
A family's struggle for love and hope in the aftermath of war In the aftermath of the Second World War, Faye Harvey struggles against the stigma of being a single mother. Then Mark Fuller, badly ravaged by his POW experiences in the Far East, arrives in Cornwall to see the three children under the guardianship of Faye and her uncle Tristan. Mark, about to enter an amicable divorce, still needs nursing. Faye is drawn to him ? but then the father of her son, a Scottish laird, turns up, offering marriage now his wife is dead. Faye is torn, but her main concern has to be what is best for her son. Meanwhile Tristan falls for the new housekeeper Susan Dowling, but their age difference and her distrust of men seem to make love impossible. And over at Ford Farm, Faye's cousin Lottie Harmon, waiting for her former GI husband to come from America, beings to fear she may not want a new life with him after all . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In Cook's latest classic English romance, Faye Harvey is 21, rich, beautiful, sophisticated, and shunned in the small Cornish town of Hennaford because her son is illegitimate. When former Japanese POW Mark Fuller arrives in town to pay his respects to the orphaned children of one of his men, he collapses. Faye, together with her self-effacing young housekeeper, the widowed Susan Dowling, and Faye's uncle Tristan, who also lives there and takes a romantic interest in Susan, insist that Mark stay with them until he is fully recuperated. Meanwhile, Faye's cousin Lottie awaits her GI husband, teetering between despair because he isn't rushing home and anger at him for not considering her feelings, so that when he does finally arrive she shrieks like a fishwife. Cook perfects her specialty in historical fiction centered on the effects of war on families, revealing the entire range of human emotions, from courage and compassion to lust, vengeance, and greed.
