In a generation where God has become mythology, guilt has become a psychological phenomenon and man has become the center of his own universe, Brennan Manning invites us to meet the the living reality of Jesus Christ and the perspective he brings into a life stifled by self-hatred. Manning writes that he has found self-hatred("unhealthy guilt, shame, remorse") to be "the predominant spiritual problem I have had to deal with..as a vagabond evangelist". In this book he introduces us to the Christ of his own experience: "a savior of boundless compassion, unbearable forgiveness, infinite patience and healing love", but he also challenges the reader to answer the question Jesus himself posed to his disciples: "Who do you say that I am?".

The book in well written, intellectually challenging and spiritually liberating. To any one who has encountered self-hatred it points the way out. To anyone who thought Jesus had lost relevance in our day this is a challenge to reconsider. Enjoy!

I was extremely excited to get this book. I have been struggling w/self hatred (or better put lack of self love) my entire life. A year and half into sobriety I was even more determined to find help. I had rec'd books and searched the internet but couldn't find anything to help me or make sense outside of a general emotional pat on back.

So when I read the reviews of this book I felt it was my key to the spiritual awakening I needed. However I found this book extremely difficult to read. Now I consider myself an above average, reasonably intelligent woman... but found a simple message of knowing Jesus complicated by the illursory of what I considered intellectually self serving wording.

I felt that the "intellectual" writing style superceded the humble message of freedom.

To put it simply, I needed a dictionary for every sentence. Had a headache by the 3rd page. If Manning would have kept message simple (or better put writing style "normal", I believe it could have transformed me.

I was touched to find Manning in recovery like myelf, I was disappointed I couldnt get behind his message.

I was told was a simple book, written beautifully....It is beautiful but not simple. I need a book about self-love in a language understandable w/out a dictionary or Harvard degree to get through. Most important I need a message that is ..."approachable".
