Editorial Reviews

"All over the place, swinging through dark pop, atmospheric instrumentals, and demented circus music ... unique music with great personality." -- Pitchfork [7.5] "This is it ... he's finally treated the faithful to a masterpiece." -- All Music Guide [HHHH ½] "Original, unique, and packed full of imagery, if this was a film, it would be the best you've ever seen." -- London Sun [HHHH] "Just as breathtaking as his other work, only more memorable." -- Chord

Acclaimed audio/visual and textual artist Barry Adamson (of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds and legendary art-punks Magazine) returned in 2006 with his sixth studio album--a debut release on his own label called Stranger on the Sofa. Seen by some as the natural successor to 1996's Oedipus Schmoedipus in its dark delivery, twisted humor, and mind-bending ease of genre shift, Stranger on the Sofa has so far only received a low-key release in the US despite its gathered accolades. An hour of Adamson's finest work in the fields of rock, soundtrack, instrumental freak-outs, and future-jazz.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Strange Musical Journey, September 22, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stranger on the Sofa (Audio CD)
There are few musicians on the modern scene as vital, as ingenious, and as off-the-wall creative as is Barry Adamson. Its really a pity he's not better known in North America. I've been following his musical odyssey for quite a while now, and with the issue of Stranger On The Sofa its plain that Adamson is not running out of ideas. One spin in the CD changer and you will find yourself on yet another strange musical journey through the world of Barry Adamson.
It took me several listens to get to like this as much as I do some of his earlier CDs like Soul Murder, but now I'm finding it hard to put away.
The first reviewer was entranced by Theresa Green. While that is an excellent song, the one that mesmerizes me is the baleful Inside Of Your Head. What a piece of music! Other favorites are the relentless Who Killed Big Bird?, the dream-like The Sorrow And the Pity, the high-energy You Sold Your Dreams, the mysterious Deja Morte, and the trance-inducing Dissemble.
There are a couple of weak cuts here, but overall Stranger On The Sofa is an excellent album and should be in the collections of everyone who considers themselves musically adventurous. Listen and hear what I am writing about!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'on THERESA GREEN', June 15, 2006
By
This review is from: Stranger on the Sofa (Audio CD)
4pm. sunny hollywood.

just got this at amoeba's in hollywood and i was awstruck by this song. 'THERESA GREEN'. i kept listening to it over and over again . . . and the moods this song provokes
are serpentine and viseral. the melody with what sounds like a piano or guitar sound is
so refreshing, a kind of 'sigh-sound'. i kept sighing . . . so internal that it leaves me highly emotional, complete, 'el final' of what
i am up to now. if i were to die tomorrow, with all the songs that have gone through-me-head i would have been satisfyed as a human being! ONTOLOGICAL! thank you sir for creating such beautiful auras of sound. -SUNofMAN
