I connected with these characters so well...they just became so real to me.

If you were to buy all 19 volumes of the original trade paperbacks it would set you back a hefty 300 bucks - so this new omnibus edition is a steal!

i have to strongly disagree with the other reviewer on several points.

1. to buy the smaller hardcovers of this series would cost you WAY more money than to buy this omnibus edition. the smaller hardcovers retail for 50 bucks each, and there are at least 9 or 10 of them, maybe more? this omnibus retails for 160, but even at the raised 200-300 range it is selling for on ebay or amazon, its still much cheaper than buying all of those 50 dollar hardcovers that only have 6 or 7 issues in each one. you can always go for the paperback digest size ones, which are pretty cheap, if you just want to read the story for the first time. there are 6 digests for maybe 20 bucks each if you want to try the series out. but if you're looking at this review, you probably already love the story and want a nice edition; this one is the way to go.

2. the last reviewer said nothing was added, this couldnt be more wrong. Terry Moore went back through the entire 80+ issue series page by page and revised, edited, re-lettered, and re-worked the panels specifically for this edition. he said there were several places where he always wished the panels were changed around, or the dialogue should have been different, or spelling errors that needed to be fixed, etc etc so he spent a ton of time fixing all those things for this omnibus. when you read this edition, it will read differently from the trades, hardcovers, or digests; this is the way the writer/artist wanted it to be. not to mention, a signed and numbered bookmark comes with this, plus an extra hardback full-color cover gallery encompassing the entire series, and the nicely-designed slipcase to top it off.

this is one of my favorite series that i own in any form, and this omnibus is one of the jewels of my collection.

Next to the Canadian TV productions Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel (1986), the 2150 page 19 volume graphic novel series Strangers in Paradise (1993-2007) is the greatest love story ever told and I've just spent a week totally gone and LOST re-reading SiP in this new 20th anniversary omnibus edition. I bought my first SiP trade paperback (#4, LOVE ME TENDER) back in the mid-90s when I was just entering my mid-twenties and that's where I saw this omnibus last month, same bookstore from all those years ago, Forbidden Planet in Glasgow, Scotland.

I still vividly recall buying LOVE ME TENDER; I'm a fan of science fiction novels and horror short stories and I'd never heard of SiP (I wasn't a comics reader, although I think I may have by this point discovered the Watchmen and Sandman graphic novels via my local library). But SiP... Gosh, SiP blindsided me. I saw those Tragedy and Comedy masks in the style of the two main characters (Francine and Katchoo) on the cover of LOVE ME TENDER, did a double take and picked it up. Flicked through the pages and... And I wasn't there. I wasn't in the store anymore. Like Alice down the rabbit hole I was GONE. Terry Moore's artwork stunned me. I never read one single dialogue balloon while I glanced through the book. I didn't have to. It was all there. These were real people, they had to be; comics, the funny pages, didn't have this kind of incredible subtlety of facial expression. I didn't even look at the price on the back of the book... just walked up to the counter in a daze and bought it. That's never happened to me, not before or since.

Over the years, as each new trade paperback came out, SiP followed me on my own epic journey through love ¬- married, an affair, divorced, married once more.

I bought this (quite expensively) completely on a whim from recommendation. I'd never read any of the series up before that, so needless to say, it was a huge risk. Was it worth it? Emphatically, "HELL YES."

Out of my personal HC collection of 200+ HC's and over 400+ graphic novels that I've read, and somewhere in the range of 15,000 comic books over a 20 year period, this collection easily ranks in my top 10 comic book stories ever made. PERIOD. I'm thinking on level with Miller's Sin City, Morrison's New X-Men, Ennis' Preacher, and Y the Last man. It's just that good. This collection compiles EVERY single issue from the entire 107 issue run in two MASSIVE omnibuses, and it also includes a 3rd hardcover featuring all of the covers to the comics of the series.

The story is phenomenal. I literally could not put the books down. It is assuredly different from anything I've ever read, and the 107 issues went by in a breeze. In my opinion, Katchoo is one of the greatest comic book characters ever created, and much of this series focuses on her depth and inner-character conflict. Keep in mind, there are no superheroes in this book. No powers, no mutants. It's all about real life, and some incredibly funny and outrageous situations that, although far-fetched, could definitely happen in a crazy world. I laughed. I wooed. I howled with enjoyment at some parts, and I screamed in anger at others. I connected with these characters so well...they just became so real to me. The main girls aren't "babes." They are real: Francine is actually overweight. However, their shining personalities are what make them beautiful. No joke, this omnibus compiles a great literary work. There is no other way to put it: there is so much depth to analyze, so many things going on. I can't say enough about it.
