When his girlfriend kicks him out, Rob decides to board a bus traveling from New York to Canada, and to document his adventures. Never did he imagine he would meet an interesting woman he dubs Gertrude, forming a bond that surprised even him. But what happens when her stop comes up?

If ever you are having a bad day, and need something to make you smile, this book is just the thing. Not only did this book make me laugh out loud, it warmed my heart. The majority of the book is intended to be humorous, but there are parts that really show a more tender side of our author, Rob. I loved getting that glimpse of a softer, fluffier version of that sharp, biting wit.

I loved watching the relationship between Rob and Gertrude blossom. They had a real connection, and the writing reflects that. It is full of honesty and heart, as well as hearty laughter. A brilliant follow up to his first book, Rob shows how truly talented he is.

Trust me, this book is sure to put a smile on your face.

I am not normally a fan of first person narratives, pseudo memoirs parading as fiction or `road-trip' literature. Yet this narrator's infectious and heart-warming voice drew me into this compelling narrative as he journeyed to Canada with the delightful Gertrude.

Robb's personality jumps up from the page and makes the most mundane topic of conversation seem vital - he could write a chapter on paint drying and it would still hypnotise the reader. Whether he is talking about his ex's `Chernobyl breakdowns' or not telling the story about his Bulgarian celebrity barber, Robb's charm and wit seduces the reader with ease.

The dialogue between Gertrude and Robb is nothing short of spectacular - their chemistry jumps right off the page. If only Hollywood would employ someone like Robb to write the dialogue in their romantic comedies...

Throughout Strangers On A Bus, Rob constantly undercuts himself by pointing out that certain stories that he tells are not true. This device is employed in the most devastating manner possible at the very end of the book, a real lump in your throat moment.

Read this book and allow Robb to take you on a humorous but bittersweet journey that will stay with you long after you have read Strangers On A Bus.

Amazing chemistry May 13, 2011
Other reviews have focused on other aspects of this book so I would like to hone in on its stand out quality - the chemistry between Robb and Gertrude. It feels genuine, passionate and carries the entire narrative. If you are interested in great love stories than this book is an absolute must read. My favourite moment is when Rob kisses Gertrude passionately in front of the receptionist he has just been flirting with, terrific writing.

My only criticism is that the narrator can sometimes be too clever for his own good - but overall this was still a terrific read.
