I bought the PS3 Stranglehold Collector's Edition because it includes one of my favorite movie Hard Boiled in Blu-ray. The movie is a classic for action lover. I was very disappointed that the movie is only not in HD quality but it look worse than the Dragon Dynasty DVD version. Shame on Sony and Midway.
The game otherwise is a lot of fun to play. 9/10

This review is only for the movie that's included on the game disc.
I mainly purchased this title for the "Hard Boiled" movie included on the Blu-Ray disc. The movie is a classic, but I am sad to say that I am very disappointed in it's quality...given it's on Blu-Ray HD. Not what I expected at all! The picture quality (sharpness and detail) is pretty good for a 15 year-old movie, but the color definitely needs to be enhanced. The soundtrack is a joke! It comes through my receiver as Dolby Digital 5.1, but it is only in stereo. My center channel and rear surround speakers never came on. All dialog are through the front surrounds. Some have claimed the picture was chopped to fit widescreens. I cannot confirm this as I do not have the DVD copy, but it does not look chopped to me. In short, this movie was not remastered at all for the Blu-Ray transfer as advertised. Hands down the worst Blu-Ray movie quality I've seen! If you're getting this title for the movie, you will definitely be disappointed.

So, I downloaded the demo from the Playstation network yesterday. The download took all night. I thought, what the heck, I might as well try it during breakfast, for just a few minutes. I had so much fun, I ended up being late for work! It was so worth it.
This is a pretty incredible game. The graphics are amazing. The cut scenes look the most natural of any that I have seen, and the game play is stellar. You can slow the action down using Tequila time (this is the same as Max Payne -- everything goes Sepia, and things slow waaaay down. It runs out fast, though so you have to be careful.) Pretty much everything is breakable and the physics are stellar. It is a lot of fun sliding across tables holding items such as apples and seeing each of the individual apples fly out of the basket and everything come crashing to the ground, for example. Everything is breakable, too, from the signs hanging above doors to gas cans in the market. John Woo was involved with this game, and you can tell. If you have ever seen one of his movies, you'll recognize his touch. This isn't a game for the kids. There is a LOT of blood and guts. Head shots splatter, for example. If you aren't a kid, but are a fan of hardcore and thrilling action, this game is definitely for you! I'd suggest the Collector's Edition. For a few bucks more you get the Blu-ray version of Hard Boiled, John Woo's last movie in Hong Kong. What I'd pay: Full Price. As soon as possible.

I don't know why this game isn't more popular - it's seriously a lot of fun and very playable. The graphics in many parts of the game are superb - awesome coastal / jungle chapter with fantastic water effects. You get to shoot from a chopper and can see the bullets splash in the water!!! The destructible environments are also very well done, you can shoot signs to fall on enemies, also the floor can be shot to pieces from under you so you actually fall through!
I really like some of the unique 'Tequila bomb' aspects of the game and the point system motivates you to improve your aim and style (shooting while in mid-air, etc). My only real complaint would be that it can easily be finished within about 8 hours, but since it's only 39 bucks - I still give it 5 stars :)

Wish I'd waited for this nice Amazon price drop, because the game's pretty short, but this is one of those games that's so fun, I gotta come back for more. And the Hard Boiled movie, whether it's HD quality or not, is one of the greatest action films ever. This game does that movie justice, so much insane killing going on it's just ridiculous. I always discover more, increasingly innovative ways to destroy everyone on screen.
Amazon's deal for this game right now makes it completely worth it.

People were saying that Hard Boiled wasn't actually a blu ray film...that it was a dvd 480i rip and thats simply not true. You get the original film in all of its glory plus the sequel game. The film is old...its from the early 90s...and it wasn't shot with a hollywood budget to begin with. Translation? This 1080p release isn't going to look great...as I only noticed the splash of colors on a few scenes myself.
As for the game its an instant classic! I wish more classic films allowed their stories to be told this way...although with that being said I'd still LOVE to see this translate back into the film genre real soon. For 70.00 bucks you can't beat one of the better PS3 releases and a throw-in blu ray classic!

I played Wet before i played Stranglehold and was told this was better. FALSE. True you can slow down time and slide on almost anything in the environment to perform acrobatic kills but the items you slide on or use to slow down time to do these acrobatic kills on are so small that you have to keep repeating the same thing over and over again. Even though you pretty much did the same thing in Wet somehow it was alot more fun in Wet than it is in Stranglehold. I stopped playing the game after the 4th chapter. Only time i put it in is to watch Hardboiled on my ps3. Which is the only reason i rated this game this high.

I purchase this game for one reason and one reason only, it was a cheap way to get the Hard Boiled Movie. Note that the movie is not in HD, so do not expect a 1080p transfer of the movie. I really like the movie, unfortunately, that did not translate to the game. This game remind me too much of Max Payne, with BulletTime and everything, except Max Payne was developed for PS2 and Stranglehold's graphic is about just as good as that. Overall, I think I played a total of 20 minutes of the game, but have watched the movie numerous time. For $6.99, its not bad.

Stranglehold is John Woo's entry to the video game market, and will probably stay that way as just an entry. Its 2010 and still know other game with the John Woo name I'm guessing he wasn't so pleased with the sales of this game. Just stick to the films John, But I applaud him for trying.
The game is a 3rd person shooter similar to Max payne, Dead to rights and whatever other game that has you playing as a cop and slo mo is involved. There is a story but it feels rushed and its just there for the sake of having a story that can be a "sequel" to John Woo's action classic "Hard boiled". This should be an early warning sign to how everything would turn out. Making a sequel to a movie in a video game format it would of worked here if better thought out and executed. What you get here is level after level shooting enemies after enemies. Now you saying so you did the same thing in Max Payne; true but Max payne back in 2000 was the first of its kind and paved the way for other shooters such as Dead to rights, matrix etc. The game games gets old after a while, the pacing is the same from start to finish and there's boss fights which are just enemies with more health and bigger guns shouting at you and some turret shooting just to add variety. But you know that the game is just trying to hard when adding those. But the John Woo factor kicks in once in a while which are the cutscenes which look really good and are worthy of the John woo title, its like your watching one of his film but in video game form which you dont get to control. The production values high there's know doubt about that, they went to great length to make everything in the game destructible, just like Woo's films you need to have a place riddled with bullets and you get a lot of that here. Now the game is short you can probably beat it in one sitting and there's some bonus materials to unlock like art, videos etc. And there's a competitive online multiplayer which is fun for a while but you wont find anyone playing. I loved this game, by this review I made it look like a crappy game but in honesty it was fun while it lasts. I reviewed it as a someone who will give a fair score. I like John Woo's film but can't give a good score just for that reason. It is a good game but a shallow one when it boils down to it(pun intended) its a game you'd probably want to rent but the collectors edition comes with the "Hard boiled" but its not HD. If you do end up buying it the regular game, play it and sell it. But the collectors edition is a great item to own just because it has "Hard boiled" on it. |
