The United States relied heavily on bombing to defeat the Germans and the Japanese in World War II, and air raids were touted as "precision" bombing in American propaganda. But was precision possible over cloud-covered Europe The United States relied heavily on bombing to defeat the Germans and the Japanese in World War II, and air raids were touted as "precision" bombing in American propaganda. But was precision possible over cloud-covered Europe or a darkened Japanese countryside? Could the vaunted Norden optical bombsight in fact "drop bombs into pickle barrels" as advertised? Were the American aircrews well trained and well protected? How good were their airplanes? What were the results of the costly raids? This work sets suppositions against facts surrounding the United States' use of strategic bombing in World War II. Chapters cover the events leading up to World War II; the start of the war; the seers and the planners; the airplanes, bombs, bombsights, and aircrews; the planes Germany used to defend itself against American planes; the five cities (Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki) that experienced the most destruction; and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey of the damage done by aerial bombing.

The book also probes the government's myth-building statements that supported America's view of itself as a uniquely humanitarian nation, and analyzes the role played by interservice rivalry-"battleship admirals" against "bomber generals."or a darkened Japanese countryside? More About the Author

Stewart Halsey Ross brings a broad education and diversified background to his works. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn), M.S. in Technical Writing (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and an M.S. in American History (Western Connecticut State University). He has been a Vice President with a major New York "Business-to-Business" Advertising and Public Relations Agency; was Associate Editor with Consulting Engineer Magazine; was Project Engineer with Pratt & Whitney's nuclear aircraft engine program; was a member of an elite U.S. Army detachment at Edwards Air Force Base responsible for operation of the Air Force's precision bombing range.
His books reflect this in-depth writing and engineering experience. For example, in "Strategic Bombing by the U.S. in World War II," Ross mocks the supposed "pickle-barrel" accuracy of the famed Norden bombsight, recalling an incident at EAFB when a "fat man" missed its target by more than a mile.
Ross considers himself a "revisionist" historian, choosing to approach his presentations contrary to "conventional wisdom." He is not reluctant to take on icons.
Ross has published four books:The Management of Business-to-Business Advertising; Propaganda for War: How the United States Was Conditoned to Fight the Great War of 1914-1918; Strategic Bombing by the U.S. in World War II: The Myths and the Facts; and How Roosevelt Failed America in World War II. His fifth, "Global Predator: U.S. Wars for Empire," is scheduled to be released by the end of 2009.
Ross reads widely to bring to his readers authoritative overviews of his topics. His Bibliographies are useful references on their own and his comprehensive Notes typically run in the many hundreds.
