Everything you always wanted to know about Asian management,
By A Customer
This review is from: Strategic Management in the Asia Pacific: Harnessing Regional and Organizational Change for Competitive Advantage (Paperback)
I was surprized that I actually enjoyed this book. It certainly is not easy reading, being chock full of academic references, WWW sites, statistics, charts/graphs and bibliographies -- but the editor (Prof. Usha) got many of these distinguished contributors (one of whom, I know is Singapore's chief economic advisor) to confront what they had written before the Asian crisis with what actually happened and to make sense of it. This is an extremely enlightening book on Asian business and a really valuable reference not just because of the quality of the chapters, but also because of the period that they cover -- the years before, during and after the crisis. There are lessons to be learned and these lessons are brought out. An absolutely invaluable reference book!

As a catalog and primer for rapidly changing times, Professor Usha has painstakingly compiled an extraordinary resource for researchers and managers on the Asia Pacific. This is a must-have book for anyone with an interest in business in the region!

I know of no other book that surveys so wide an area in Asia-Pacific business with such depth. The chapters are divided into sections that deal with relevant stakeholders for businesses in the important Asia-Pacific region including governments and local customers. This book, with contributions from among the "who's who" of Asian business research is now required reading in my company.

Excellent coverage of the Asian crisis -- causes, consequences, motivators, etc. I particularly liked the careful attention to policy implications and the time-line (before the crisis, during and after the crisis) followed. An indespensible book!

This book's strength lies in its approaching Asian business and operating in Asia from various stakeholders' perspectives -- governments, local businessess, foreign multinational corporations, etc.. Excellent and systematic coverage of a complex topic!

This is an excellent book!,

I disagree with the reviewer (from Chicago) who indicated that this book was complicated and lacked focus. This is an excellent book to review the influences on and developments in Asian business. The book is carefully organized into sections (for example it looks at strategic management from both multinationals' and local companies' perspectives) and very well edited -- a mounumental job no doubt given the breadth and scope of the subject matter. Some of the articles provide in-depth insights not easily found elsewhere: I found Professor Haley's chapters on business in Singapore and Vietnam extremely valuable; I also liked the little editorials at the end of each chapter.

Outstanding reference,

This book has received many kudos from prominent academics and businesspeople -- and I would like to add my own here. An extraordinary labor undertaken by Professor Usha harnessing the talent and output of some of the most prominent researchers working on the Asia Pacific. Their insights and arguments on business processes ranging from initial entry into countries, to managing human resource problems, to circumventing political and financial risks, make this book invaluable. Though not necessarily bed-time reading, and some of the analysis is not intended for the layman, parts of this book (if not all as it does cover an enormous area) should be read by anyone doing business in the vast and complex Asia-Pacific region, or by researchers exploring business-related topics. An essential reference.

An extremely well-organized information base,
By Stanley "Rob" Dalton (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Strategic Management in the Asia Pacific: Harnessing Regional and Organizational Change for Competitive Advantage (Paperback)
This book is extremely well-organized into sections (localstakeholders, local governments' strategies, foreign multinationals' strategies, local companies' strategies, etc.)and beautifully edited... Contributors to this book include such experts as the Chief Economist of Singapore, the Dean of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Provost of the Singapore Management University, and an advisor to the British Parliament on technology policy! I found information in the book not easily available elsewhere, especially dealing with business-government relations and strategies in the Asia-Pacific. I also liked the compendium of WWW sites...
