5.0 out of 5 stars How often does one say "awesome!" about a textbook? January 26, 2012
I'm a professor of strategy, and have been teaching Strategic Management for undergraduates, MBAs, and executives (in and outsides the U.S.) for over 10 years, and never found a text that satisfied my desire to present top-notch material in a synthesized fashion. But I now have found this book--Frank Rothaermel's new Strategic Management text is really a brand-new text that makes a quantum leap forward in presenting cutting edge theory and examples leveraging the unique intersection of theory/concepts, empirical research, and practical application. Strategic management is about superior positioning for competitive advantage, and no other book on the market except Frank's has been able to position itself in this sweet spot. Not to mention the cutting edge examples that today's students can relate to (Facebook, Tesla Motors, Apple, BYD, Tata Group, and so on). Another great differentiator is that Frank wrote not only 12 MiniCases (great to get discussion started) but also 15 full-length cases that are perfectly integrated with the text to teach concepts and frameworks presented therein. The full-length cases also come with financial data already prepared in spreadsheets for ratio analysis, another first in the strategy textbook industry. Clearly, Frank's book is unique on many dimensions and has carved out a valuable, rare, and hard if not impossible to imitate strategic position in the textbook market combined with fully integrated and innovative example and exercises. It is not just a textbook but a new generation strategy teaching product that will make even novices look like rock stars. And students just "love" the content--how often do you find that emotional reaction about college textbooks? Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this the best textbook on strategic management? December 23, 2012
I teach strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship in undergraduate and graduate programs at a top-25 business school. Rothaermel's Strategic Management is the best textbook for students and the best reference book for practitioners, especially c-level executives. The reasons are many, and among them are these ten.

1. Superior coverage of entrepreneurship and innovation - much better than other strategy textbooks

2. Excellent cases on innovation and entrepreneurship appropriate for undergraduate programs, MBA programs, and executive programs (e.g., Better World Books: Social Entrepreneurship and the Triple Bottom Line; Genentech; Numenta: The Age of Truly Intelligent Machines?; and Tesla Motors and the US Auto Industry, cases A and B)

3. Sound analysis and synthesis of theory and practice throughout the book

4. Organization of the textbook into three sections -- strategy analysis, formulation, and implementation -- simple, coherent, and powerful

5. Clear presentation of approaches, models, and insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and other social sciences

6. Key insights on transnational strategy - again, much better than other general strategy textbooks

7. For executives especially, a highly useful resource for analyzing, developing, and executing strategy (and, in ebook format, an essential mobile reference on a notebook computer or a tablet computer)

8. Easy for students and instructors to find precisely and quickly what they want in the table of contents or the index - important for any reference book

9. Well organized, well written, well documented, and well illustrated from the first page to the last

10. For instructors, an array of support materials particularly well done

Rothaermel's Strategic Management sets the standard for strategy textbooks.

In a word...PHENOMENAL!. Frank's book is exactly the right mix of theory and practical application in a strategic management textbook. I have taught classes in marketing, sales, management, international management and strategic management and this is, by far, the best textbook I have ever used in any course I have taught at any undergraduate level. I also have 10 years of experience in the corporate world and I find that the topics, concepts, and examples are completely relevant and useful to today's business student. It is a must for any institution looking for a strategic management textbook!

One of the greatest things about the textbook is the mix of both short and long cases and strategy highlights. There are times when an instructor needs to get a quick point across and can use the chapter cases to accomplish this and then there are time when more in depth concepts need to be analyzed and this is where the full length cases are invaluable. I have never had to search for outside information or supporting materials when using Frank's textbook. It is all there in one, perfect package!!

The other item that I find that is unique from other textbooks that I have used is that Frank sets up the chapter with an opening case. These are companies or situations for which the students are very interested and then that case can be used to teach the entire chapter. Brilliant! It makes teaching the concepts much easier because you can always refer back to the chapter case example. Additionally, the full length cases are favorites of my students and they appreciate that the cases are up-to-date and deal with companies that are well known. I have had a lot of positive feedback from my students on this part of the book.

Thank you, Frank, for a truly wonderful product!

Access code issues which result in a student having to pay 115 for access code in order to take an exam. I like the book but too many issues with their Mcgraw Hill connect plus..
