Each section features a specific theme chosen because of its importance in reducing sensitivity to your environment.

Section A: Air and water purifiers are essential to those who live in conditions where the air and water contains environmental toxins that are detrimental to health. If you are highly sensitive, the levels of these toxins may be minimal, but are enough to affect you. Filtering the air and water in the home is essential, and the first step in alleviating your symptoms.

Section B: This section focuses on the textile industry and the processes used to manufacture cotton and wool products, the most common materials found in bedding. Knowing what takes place in the textile industry from the raw materials to finished product will help you make purchasing decisions that will not only improve your health, but also have a desirable effect on the ecosystem.

Section C: The type of clothing we wear plays a major role in our health because the skin can easily absorb any toxic chemicals that are utilized the growing of the raw materials or the processing and finishing of the fibers. This section focuses on silk, linen, and man-made textiles as well as care techniques for natural fabrics. Whenever possible, you should purchase clothing made from natural fibers. Always research whether chemicals have been applied to the garment at any step of the manufacturing process.

Section D: Personal care products play a major role in our lifestyle. However, for those who are sensitive, these products can cause unpleasant reactions. The tools and information in this section will help you make knowledgeable choices about the types of products that may be suitable for you. We provide a list of ingredients to avoid and suggest brands you may be able to tolerate. Although we provide information and suggestions for products that can be used by those who are sensitive, it is important to keep in mind that locating products that are suitable for you is a very individual process and must be done with care.

Section E: One of the most problematic issues for sensitive individuals is the ability to tolerate a wide range of foods. Because food is such an important aspect of your lifestyle, so many activities revolve around food, you may find that your food limitations are also having an impact on your lifestyle. The ideas, recipes, and food sources discussed in this section have been tested by our family. You may find some of the initial recipes for improving your food tolerance very bland. However, the purpose is to enable you to build your tolerance slowly to foods that will furnish essential nutrients.

Section F: Pesticide exposure is often the catalyst that produces the downward spiral into environmental illness. Once you are ill, further exposure can exacerbate symptoms to a dangerous level. It is of major importance for the allergic and environmentally sensitive to avoid these products at all costs. We cannot emphasize enough how damaging these products are to your health. Fortunately, there is no need to use most commercial pesticides as many alternative, safe and effective, non-toxic forms are available. These natural products to not threaten your health, the health of your children, pets, and other creatures that share this planet with us.

About the Author

This is another publication in the field of Environmental Health from Heather and Myrna Millar. Their work is based on extensive research and "hands on" experience with illnesses that are triggered by environmental factors.

Heather Millar has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia. She is licensed as a registered nurse in British Columbia, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Arkansas. Her pediatric nursing career includes experience in the following clinical areas: oncology, hematology, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, and endocrine. She has practiced at LeBonheur Children's Hospital, Memphis; Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, San Antonio; New Orleans Children's Hospital, New Orleans; Florida Hospital, Orlando; British Columbia Children's Hospital, Vancouver; and St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon.

Myrna Millar has Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, a Bachelor of Education with great distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, and a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan. Myrna has extensive experience as a businesswoman and educator, particularly in the area of the development, writing, and implementation of training programs. She has also served on a number of community boards and organizations that have a primary focus in the health field, including the Minister's Advisory Council for Women's Health for the Province of British Columbia and the BC Women's Hospital Foundation Board.
