Theory Construction,
By Carin Reust (Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
As a beginning researcher in medicine, I was quite surprised to find that medicine is considered an atheoretical science. Perhaps I missed a few classes along the way, but as a family physician, I thought I understood theory and theory development. That was until I really started thinking about it. After asking several researchers, mentors, and general queries to other physicians about theory development, I was left with the following: "This is very, very important, but I can't tell you how to start."Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing is a well written, easy to read book that gives a basic underpinning to theory development. It is the first book on this topic that I could easily understand. Concepts, statements and theories are developed through analysis, synthesis and derivation. This book, with examples, offers a step-by-step approach to development. It is well worth your time.

Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing (4th Edition),

This is a classic book on the construction of theory. It is very helpful for the novice graduate student who is starting to get used to the language and world of theory. It provides foundational material on theory development and utilization in practice and research. This book also serves as a ready reference for "seasoned" nurses when reflecting on theory development and modification.

I was so happy to find this book on Nursing Theory construction and concepts for a Nursing class I am teaching. It is very accessible. Also, thorough enough for my purposes of getting grounded again in how theory is evolved with the use of concept analysis to prepare students for writng a senior paper. This book is big improvement over older texts on the same topic!
