Fun:
I have played several dozen computer games, and several hundred console games, and this game is in my top 5.

First, Cons
leveling up your captains takes 30 min. of straight work on him
there are about 12 faces in this game, out of about a hundred characters
you can only by ships from capitol towns
if you don't constantly trade, there is no way to survive the game
Sea battles are 1(you) at a time vs. up to 5

Now pros
60 towns
quite a few ships to choose from
a good mix of fighting war and trading
if you fight enough for a nation, you get your own town to build up
you can choose several places to build your town
even though sea battles are stacked against you, they are quite easy once you get the hang of it
duels are very easy, if you pay attention
you can loot ships, sink them, or steal them**
you can loot towns, or annex them for another nation
graphics are farely good, but you won't even relize them once you get sucked in
you can get married, for side missions, good trade routes, pirate info, etc.

for my review
I bought this game looking for something cheap and entertaining, I found it.I have been addicted to it for 6 weeks now, I have started making my own flags(oh yeah, you can create your own flag to be used in the game), I have gone down several paths, one is pure trading, another is the path of a pirate, and the last two, one I fight for any nation willing to pay me what I want, and the other I fight for one nation for dominance. Back to the review, If you are looking for a game like AOE, AOM, etc. don't get this game, it is not set around war and building your civilization, if you are looking for a game that wont get old in 4 hours, or even 40, and that keeps you choosing different paths every time to turn on your computer, this is your game. It is set around trade, and reputation, you can improve or destroy your relations with any nation depending on any tiny action you choose ~~~side note~~ you can annex every town except one belonging to a nation, and buy their trust back, so their military doesn't attack you any more~~~
So I would like you to try this game, it is only 10 bucks, and is great quality for that price

I bought PR2 abour 4 days ago and have really enjoyed the game a great deal, with one major exception: It keeps canking out when in the city view and brings up the windows blue screen of death. It seems the game was developed in 2004 by Ascaron, a game developer in Germany that went bankrupt in 2009, and was originally designed for Windows ME, 95/98, and XP. Support was never provided for Vista or today's 7. Amazon shows the company producing / distributing as Strategy First, but it appears they purchased the rights to the game, then did nothing to support it. In any case, if you are patient with the constant canks and do not mind advancing a few days of game play between computer shutdowns, go for it. Truly, the game is 5 star material - especially for the price - but the annoyance and potential damage to my (ergo, your) computer may just not be worth it.

I played this game a few years back, and quite liked it, so I was glad to be able to buy it from Amazon, download it, and play it once again. I am not much of a gamer, but I quite like the concept of this game, which allows you to develop profitable trade routes, and build an empire through commerce and battle. I spend hours on this game, which leads me to some things I think would improve the game:

1. As has been mentioned, it takes 30 minutes or so, of focusing on one new trade captain to develop him enough trade experience to set out on an automatic trade route. As the game progresses, that can get tedious. You can check out the inn at each port, and hope to run on to a more experienced captain hanging out, so you can hire him instead, and perhaps cut that time, but I would make it so you could dispense with the experience to setup a trade route, especially later in the game, when you want to focus on other things.

2. Attacking harbors with 10 cannons can also get tedious ... I wish there was a more fun way to do that. Perhaps an option to allow your convoy to do that automatically, and then just skip the battle and get the results (win or lose).

3. I wish there were a pathway to gain nation status on your own, so you could then go to war with a nation, and fight without a letter of marque without affecting your status with other nations, and most importantly, so you could ultimately attack and annex cities under your own flag.

4. I wish it were a little easier to find all of the artifacts, and obtain this legendary steam ship I have only read about.

5. I wish there were ways to change the goods your cities can produce.

Most of all, I just wish the game was continuing to evolve, and that we could look forward to a Port Royale 3 ????
