Our music world is absolutely dominated by controlled, engineered Plexiglas-perfect pop music designed to get into our heads and play up our most basic appeals. For the average person, this isn't a problem. Most people like simple music, it reassures them and keeps them comfortable inside their own bubble of taste. Horace X is not quite one of these bands.
HX is a unique melting pot of only vaguely related musical styles, woven together with a tight rhythm section and spraypainted with highly entertaining vocal chanting. Right from the get-go and all throughout the album you will hear jungle beats, funky bass lines, equally funky sax counters, ragga and reggae chants, random sampling, and straight celtic fiddling. Yes, really. This album plays around with all of these elements, giving an in-your-face, dance-friendly demonstration of creativity and outright fun. Favorite tracks of mine include the engaging and funky "Skin", the playful "She Want", and the politically-charged "Puppet Show". Great for party music, great for casual enjoyment as well. Sound samples aren't enough? Check YouTube for just one live HX video, and you'll see why I had to rate this band, this album, and their work a healthy five stars.
