Book Description

June 1, 2005 0273701673 978-0273701675 1

This book will become the bible of a bible for the field of business strategy for many years to come. An invaluable playbook of strategic moves for managers, marketers and entrepreneurs, covering all 14 known attacking and defending strategies, and backed up by over three hundred international examples.

  • Backed up by copious examples from industry:  more than 300 examples in the text, and a unique chapter case study on how Japanese auto firms conquered the US market using a combination of various moves covered in the book.
  • Almost twenty years after the appearance of Al Ries's groundbreaking Marketing Warfare, the time is right to bring the practitioners up to date with the thinking and show them how to use it.
  • A Complete manual.  The book is built around the 14 strategic moves.  It shows you what move to use, how to use it, and when. Like a book of chess moves for business.

  • Positioning and Marketing Warfare are two of the most successful books ever published in marketing/business strategy, and Strategy Plays clearly falls in that space.

  • Will prominently feature endorsements from Kotler and from Ries.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"This book will be a winner as Vasconcellos offers the most comprehensive treatment and assessment of attack and defense business strategies.  It is guaranteed to stimulate your strategic and tactical imagination."

Philip Kotler

"This book is great.  There's no better analogy for marketing than warfare...a superb job in outlining the many strategic choices involved in fighting an effective marketing war."

Al Ries (author of Positioning and Marketing Warfare)

In business as in war, you can be small but win.  You can be large and lose.  Nothing is written except the rules of success and failure.

Following these rules is the key to many a victory.  Knowing how to interpret the business landscape and move strategically.  Whether to attack or defend.  When to enter the field and when to withdraw.  How to isolate, outflank or encircle your opponents. Explaining these rules and how to use them is the purpose of one book, Strategy Moves

Strategy Moves equips you with the complete set of strategic options at you disposal. Fourteen essential moves; eight defense and six attack, to help you start beating your opponents and making real progress towards victory in the market.  From successful defense at the battle of Rorke¿s Drift to the successful Japanese assault on global car markets, the lessons of conflict and competition are drawn together to help you to pick the right strategic battles, make the right strategic moves and coordinate them decisively in the market.

With Strategy Moves, you will never be short of a winning business strategy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A NO-NONSENSE BOOK THAT DELIVERS AN ABUNDANCE OF SUBSTANCE!, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Strategy Moves: 14 Complete Attack and Defence Strategies for Competitive Advantage (Paperback)
A clear, detailed, informative explanation of attack and defense strategies. The book provides the most vivid use of military strategy to shed light and insight on effective business strategies. The author is extremely straightforward in presenting his ideas and conclusions. Cuts-to-the-chase; a no-nonsense book that delivers an abundance of substance. If it's military strategy, business strategy or, ideally, the linkages between the two that interest you, you'll appreciate this book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must be on your desk, November 10, 2009
This review is from: Strategy Moves: 14 Complete Attack and Defence Strategies for Competitive Advantage (Paperback)
It is for many years popular to mix marketing and military strategy in the marketing books, starting with Trout's and Ries'es "Marketing warfare". Most of them aren't worth reading as they are just military legends reprinted with the final sentence added, going something like this:"you also use this experience and adopt it in marketing".

This book is a pleasant exception. If Philip Kotler described it as a book "which encourages your strategic vision and develops your imagination" it says something about it.

The author methodically covers all military strategies and gives very up-to-date examples from the marketing about every single one of them. What makes this books different from the others is that it is very structural and offers systematic approach, which is pretty rare nowadays, especially in marketing.

You should keep it on your table within hand reach. I do, so competitors - watch out!
