Philip Aleo has created a comprehensive and unique history of this most famous jewel of Durango, Colorado, from the early conflicts to its continuing restoration. This is a large book full of reproduced newspaper articles, excellent antique and full color photographs, and thoroughly accurate information. It also offers more than a snapshot of Colorado history: William Henry Jackson, Otto Mears and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, the feude over the Royal Gorge, and the early development of Durango, to name a few. One chapter tells the history of Henry Strater and his family. There is also a section on famous folks who have stayed in the hotel. If anyone is unable to spend a night or two in this lovely Victorian place, Philip's book is certainly the next best thing.

This is an EXCELLENT book about the historic Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado, with plenty of information about its past and present. Photos--both black-and-white and color plates are in abundance, and makes you want to plan your next trip to Colorado someplace besides Denver. Clearly a labor of love. They don't build hotels like this anymore, and they never will again. Support the restoration and preservation of America's architectural jewels!

I purchesed the book on a visit to Durango, Colorado. My grandfather and great grandfather lived in Durango in 1913 and I found documents that verified my great grandfather was a desk clerk at the Strater Hotel. The book has a special meaning to me. It is a great historical narrative of Durango.
