Interesting interviews, August 20, 2010
This review is from: Stratford Gold: Fifty Years, Fifty Stars, Fifty Conversations (Hardcover)
This text was written as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford Ontario. It is simply a collection of interviews of 50 people who were in some shape or form a part of those 50 years. Most of the interviews are with actors, but there are also interviews with directors, musicians, etc.
If you are a recent fan of the Festival I don't think this text is for you, unless you want insight into some actor's opinions of their performances, or their views on what the Festival should be. If you started attending Stratford after the 2001 season many of the people and references are going to be foreign to you. (With the exception of the occasional "star" that is known outside of their association with the Festival) However, if you were attending the Festival before this century, or have an interest in acting, theatre or the Festival itself then I think you will enjoy this book.
The structure is simple, the interviewer / author ask a question and you read the response. The text is a convenient read that way, as you can read an interview over breakfast, or read a few in your favorite chair and then put it down. You can come and go from it as you please and not hamper the enjoyment of the reading of the work as a whole.
An interesting look into the minds of the people who were a part of the first 50 years of this important North American artistic institution.
