cheap and flimsy, August 20, 2007
This review is from: Strathwood 6-Piece Solar Tiki Torch Light Set (Lawn & Patio)
These are all plastic even the spike to put them into the ground. We put them together and tried to put the first into the ground and the spike bent. We could only put them into the flower beds since the spikes bent trying to get them in the grass. The color is wrong on them a well they look very fake and cheap. I would avoid these.

Surprisingly realistic "flame", September 8, 2007
This review is from: Strathwood 6-Piece Solar Tiki Torch Light Set (Lawn & Patio)
Solar lights for yard/garden are notoriously inadequate for providing any real light. The nickel cadmium batteries are inferior and outdated, and I don't know why manufacturers don't offer an upgrade to new technology batteries with more power. But these Chinese imported lights are for mood/accent lighting. Solar lights are good for that. The 3 LED's inside the translucent lens flicker in an amazingly convincing yellow "flame." Really cool, and I don't impress easily. The plastic faux bamboo stands are not as convincing, and are too weak for the task. If you put these lights at full height using all 3 sections of plastic bamboo tubes you're likely to be disappointed. I used one section, holding light about 1.5 feet above ground, and they looked nice. As each section breaks, I have extras. If you want them tall, and you are innovative, you can adapt genuine bamboo cut from a real tiki torch, and replace the cheap plastic tubes. Mine are a few weeks old, and after a sunny day they stay flickering all night.

Works as advertised, October 10, 2007
This review is from: Strathwood 6-Piece Solar Tiki Torch Light Set (Lawn & Patio)
Being forewarned I assembled the torches with a bit of anxiety. Yes, they are made of thin plastic and especially the stakes are flimsy. It also took a while to take of the stickers A through E. Here are the good news: 1) Really like the on/off switch. In dark periods such as winter I can charge the batteries and know to have light when I need it.
2) Here in CA, they run through the entire night in October - good efficiency.
3) Made a whole for the stakes with a iron rod and then "planted" torches. Worked well and the torches held up in the soil for a few weeks now.
4) Last but not least: They do provide enough light to see steps in the dark, just enough. I have all six spread out over a 10 yard area - it's perfect.
I would buy them again for that price.
I also would purchase the same item if sturdier for twice the price.
Ideally I could use real bamboo for the bottom part if an adapter part would exist.
Cheers !
