Almost great...not quite there,
By M.S. Hennessy (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hal Leonard The Fender Stratocaster (Paperback)
This book is very detailed in the history of the Stratocaster and has some good historical information about Fender and CBS. Great detail for learning how to date a Stratocaster (especially for those novices looking to buy on Ebay). The information is chronologically presented and the text formatting is inconsistent. The b&w photos are printed poorly. This book is in serious need of an update (it references through Stratocasters manufactured in 1993). There is also a purist approach to not consider Fender's 2nd line (the Squier Brand) which has (in some people's opinions), higher quality than what carried the Fender name (at least in the mid-80's). In the absence of a better publication, I highly recommend this book.

A great reference on Strats,
This review is from: Hal Leonard The Fender Stratocaster (Paperback)
This little book is one of the best references I have ever come across for the Stratocaster. It goes into a good level of detail regarding the history of this great guitar and how it has changed over time. I found the section on dating Strats especially useful. I have referenced the book quite a bit in describing what I wanted on my Custom Strat. The only drawbacks would be some of the formatting of the text (no biggie) and many of the b/w photos would be more effective in color. If you are a Fender fan and/or a gear-head, I would highly recommend this book and Duchossoir's Telecaster book.

The Fender Stratocaster: foreword by Eric Clapton There is a wealth of information here but much of it is poorly presented. Spelling errors on almost every page along with very poor quality photos give a very amateurish feel to what could be a well researched book. Wiring schematics that need a magnifying glass to examine could have been enlarged or left out. I'd like to see the new improved model.

Somewhat outdated & not the best quality,

This book is fine, but it's about 10 years old! The print quality leaves much to be desired, although what's there is accurate. Look for something more up-to-date.

This is a great book!A lot of info on the Stratocaster, but the graphics and the layout is cheesy, I hope the next time A.R. Duchossoir puts out a revision, he actually hires a Graphic Designer to do the content the justice it deserves.

This authors books are generally very drab in appearance. Having said that the author is one of the premier experts on all sorts of guitars -not just the strat. There is a huge wealth of detail in this book and its a must have for the strat lover. Compared to this author, Tony Bacon pumps out glossy and superficial books by the absolute bucket load, and I know because I own most of them! And Bacons books are cool in their own way. This book is not fancy, but its 100% solid and authentic. The author of this Hal Leonard title is an electric guitar scholar, as it were, and dwarfs most other writers in this area. Buy it and be thankful. Buy it used, and be even happier. Also: this book does not cover strat developments for the past 10 years. Thats not a flaw in the book; its an old title. But what this book DOES cover it handles with skill and ease and depth.

I've owned the paperback version of this book for years. Great book with tons of detailed specs on the Fender Stratocaster. The book is a bit out of date by today's standards, but informative in it's own right. I would love to see an updated version repressed.I purchased the Kindle for Mac version of the book on Amazon to have access to the book electronically & in turn minimize my physical library. Big Mistake! The Kindle version does not support color. Think; black & white scanned PDF type document. Bummer. I will reconsider future Kindle book purchases as the result of this transaction. This would not have been a problem had it been a traditional text book, but not a book with detailed color photography. Hey Amazon, what were you thinking? Side note; The Telecaster version is equally wonderful also. Future Kindle Reader & Kindle Book buyers should save their cash & purchase a better product like the Apple iPad.

This paperback, although small in size, is jam packed with everything you'd ever want to know about a Fender Stratocaster guitar. I rather enjoyed this reading and still do till this day. Buy it! The only thing that surpasses it is the later Stratocaster Chronicles a much larger and concise read with much, much more as to illustrations! This book though is well worth the money. Buy it!
