5.0 out of 5 stars I love this music., September 24, 2008

For me the emergence of young musicians like this is always a joy. I originally came across these guys when they were recording under the moniker MTKJ quartet. There is a fine review of their Day of the Race CD by Troy Collins on Amazon.
The personel has been consistent whatever the name: Jason Mears (alto sax and clarinet), Kris Tiner (trumpet, flugelhorn), Paul Kikuchi (drums) and Ivan Johnson (double bass). The compositions on this recording are all by Mears or Tiner. Collins does an excellent job in his description of their influences. I will suggest one point of reference: Vinny Golia. According to the group's web site, they have all played with him and/or studied with him. If you are familiar with Golia's great body of music, they you have some idea of what to expect.
I also want to emphasize that these guys like long, evolving structures. Three of the pieces are over ten minutes in length and feature several sections. When they play, they will sometimes perform their sets in one long suite.
Listen to the samples on Amazon. Go to their website and download some free samples they provide of performances. But, whatever you do, if you are a fan of creative improv music, you need to give these guys a listen. They represent the strength and future of the tradition. Enjoy.
