Another example of the record companies gone mad. Why on earth BMG/RCA has deleted this from the catalog is beyond my understanding, particularly when the performances are as vital and wonderful as these. The sound is warm and Boston Pops play with marvellous feeling for this music, a real tribute to how much Fiedler loved this music. It is hard to believe these recordings date from the mid 1950's. I was fortunate enough to find this disc in a used cd store recently and if you can find it, I highly recommend snatching it up. It will be hard to find a more enjoyable disc of Strauss music.

At long last I am able to relive a childhood memory of late night radio. On this CD you will hear the 'Bahn Frei Polka' that frantic upbeat sound that signled the begining and end of the nightly Jean Shepherd Radio Broadcasts.

This Living Stereo recording, remarkably well recorded and still sounding fresh was made as long ago as 1956-59. The balancing and tonal range as well as the dynamics make it very competitive even today.

As far as the selection and performances are concerned, this is both well played and generous at 72 minutes. There are 7 waltzes here, and all played with taste with 5 polkas interwoven to break up the 3/4 time signatures. The polkas are all played with dash and not a little orchestral virtuosity. Stylistically it should be noted that these waltzes do not make any reference to the Viennese tradition of delaying the 3rd beat in the bar. Consequently these are more American performances rather than Viennese. For that you really have to go to the VPO.

Ignoring that one point, I would suggest that this disc certainly deserves to be included in a short-list of attractive collections when considering the purchase of such a disc.

This is a replacement CD for one which was damaged. A very fine reminder of what an exquisite talent he was in presenting classical music to the multitudes!
