Richard Strauss's early violin concerto is still a somewhat underappreciated work. Completed in 1882 it is arguably the composer's first really major work, and although it might not be a timeless masterpiece comparable with the composer's very greatest works it is still a remarkably assured affair with plenty of wistfully memorable themes, lyricism and warm colors. I knew it primarily in the EMI recording with Sarah Chang, and although that one is very good I have to admit that I harbor a slight preference for Boris Belkin on the disc at hand; his playing is just a tiny bit more spirited, achieving the kind of glowing lyricism appropriate for the work to a somewhat greater extent than Chang, and he is very finely supported by the Radio-Symphonieorchester Berlin.

The Oboe Concerto and Duet-Concertino for clarinet, bassoon, harp & strings are both late works (1945 and 1947, respectively). The former might just be the most glorious oboe concerto ever written, at least since the classical age, and inhabits the same autumnal, achingly wistful, glowing sound world as the Vier Letzte Lieder. It is also lovely performed here by Gordon Hunt. As for the accompaniment, Ashkenazy's approach is certainly sumptuous, though some might prefer somewhat greater clarity; I cannot quite manage to complain when the results are as gorgeous as they are, however.

The Duet-Concertino is something of a rarity, but it is rather hard to understand why, especially given the advocacy here. Dimitri Ashkenazy and Kim Walker are excellent soloists with much impressively executed interaction and (apparently) real dialogue between the instruments. Again, I suppose some might wish for just a little bit more clarity in the orchestral playing, but to my ears the lush opulence of the sound is exactly right for this beautiful music. The Decca sound is good, and overall this is a very strongly recommended disc.
