Happily depressing and sublimely devine......,
By Nathan Christian (Pitcairn, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Strawberry Switchblade (Audio CD)
If Switchblade Symphony was a distored mirror, Strawberry Switchblade would be the twisted reflection. Rose and Jill were a years ahead of SwitchBlade Symphony, but they shared the same musical ideas in an odd, different, and twisted way. While Symphony's music was dark and harrowing in a sinister way, Strawberry's was bright and beautiful with dark undertowings.
Both groups were sadly short lived. Both groups had 2 females as the core group. The album starts out with "Yesterday" an bright, sunny song about...suicide! The it's followed by "Deep Water" about the overwhelming feelings in a relationship... All the songs have their own energy...but the lyrics are almost always gloomy, and suffering from loneliness, isolation, and despair. It's quite amusing how a peron wouldn't really realize just how sad this cd is without really listening to the words. This import cd has the main album, plus tons or unreleased songs and b-sides...20 songs total! Not all the songs work on this cd, but the base album is a devine masterpiece of hapilly gloomy dance pop from the 80's... |
