Wow,

This review is from: Stray Dogs (Audio CD)
Over the last few years some of my favorites--Lucinda, Hiatt, and Lyle--seem to have faded a bit. Mr. Picott has filled that void just about by himself. He does mellow, mid-tempo, and rockin' all very well, with thoughtful lyrics and well drawn characters. Think Don Henley, but with more consistent lyrical depth and nary a synthesizer to be found. In general, when I buy music I am happy if half the songs are solid. Nine of these twelve are outstanding, and eleven are solid. His debut, Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues, is also an amazing record. Time will tell, but I have a feeling these two disks will sit up in my all time top ten along with records like Steve Earle's El Corazon, Springsteen's Nebraska, Sticky Fingers by the Stones, and Making Movies by Dire Straits. Buy this!

I'm gonna go and say it..........yeap........no doubt about it this thing is as big as Greetings was for Bruce fans, Closing Time was to Tom Waits fans, Guitar Town to Steve Earle fans, Mongrel to Bob Seger fans and Tom Petty's Heartbreakers debut to his fans. Rod Picott simply assimulates the best of each and turns their artistic expressions into something that is unique and all his own. There simply isn't a bad tune to be found. With band member David Henry at the production helm, Picott has come up with a monster 2nd effort, the first being his 2001 debut disc "Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues" equally as good as this disc (but that's another review). Calling Nashville home, Picott writes for others as well as recording on his own. With guest such as Alison Krauss, duet on "Circus Girl", and Austin singer/writer Slaid Cleaves on "River Runs", Picott has sculptured a very heartfelt and deep perspective from a true poets point of view. " Workshirts and Turpentine" would be a perfect vehicle for a Springsteen duet and Rod's vocals on this sucker are spookly as good as anything Bruce has cut in recent years. On "Not Going Down" Rod grabs hold of the true spirit in which it was written, turning it into one of the many cornerstones on the album. What I'm baffled about is the fact that there has been very little press on Stray Dogs which proves my point that the music business in general forgot how to put their ears to the ground and recognize any earth shaking vibes that might rumble forth from the alleyways of saints and sinners, winners and loosers. With no major label or press attention this one's gonna be a *word of mouth* thing. Stuff that legends are made from started out in the same fashion. Yes indeed..................Mr Picott is going to be one artist I'm going to be spreading the word, sharing the music and tuning into for a long.............long time. Catch the wave as it begins to form. Breathtaking, exhuberent, efervesent and eternal............."Stray Dogs" is the REAL DEAL!

There's a reason you don't see any negative reviews for Rod Picott; he's one of the best newer talents on the scene. His music is rootsy with bluesy, rock edges. This guy's songwriting is what sets him apart though; he's a great wordsmith, & an excellent musician. Get all of his stuff, & I highly recomend his live disc which is available at his web-site www.rodpicott.com. He's also one of the nicest guys in the music business.
