Book Description

Beautiful is a dangerous thing to be when one is unprotected. That is a lesson Abigail learns well when her master s son, Jason, takes her to his bed. Jason s mother, Ester, may have educated her as a daughter instead of a slave, his father, Cleopas, may have obeyed Hebrew law rather than Roman in the running of his household, but none of that matters to their son. At least, it doesn t until he has a child of his own on the way.

Over her seven years in the Visibullis household, Abigail has gotten accustomed to being a slave. She loves her fellow servants, she adores her mistress, and she respectes her master. She does not welcome change, neither when Jason decides she is better fit for a lover than a handmaid nor when he discoveres he loves her too much to leave her as anything but a wife. But she carries his child, so she can hardly argue. And maybe, given time, she could come to love him too....

Israel s unrest finds a home in her bosom, but their rebellion tears apart her world. Death descends with Barabbas s sword, and Abigail is determined to be there when he is handed the penalty for the crimes that destroyed her family. But when she ventureds to the trial, heavy with child and heavier still with hatred, it is not Barabbas that the crowd demands be crucified. Instead, it is the teacher Cleopas and Jason had begun to follow, the man from Nazareth that some call the Son of God....

She was born free, made a slave, married out of her bonds. But she never really knew freedom until she felt the fire of a stray drop of blood from a Jewish carpenter. She was disowned by Israel, despised by Rome, desired by all. Yet she never knew love until she received the smile of a stoic Roman noble.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Haunting and powerful are two words that come to mind at the close of reading Roseanna M. White s debut novel, A Stray Drop of Blood. Not since Francine Rivers Mark of the Lion trilogy has a book and its characters captured me so completely. From its rich, historical prose that depicts the era of Christ with startling reality, to a compelling love story that will both jolt and seize your heart, this is one of those rare novels that haunts you centuries beyond the last page. Amid the seething unrest of Roman tyranny and Hebrew uprising, a spell-binding saga unfolds, unleashing startling twists of both fate and heart that will leave you utterly breathless. --~Julie Lessman, author of A Passion Most Pure

[White] draws the reader in with irresistible characters and keeps him reading with complex action and a heart-clutching story. Not to be missed by anyone who loves Biblical fiction! --~Marta Perrry author of Her Only Hero

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Journey Through History, December 11, 2009
This review is from: A Stray Drop of Blood (Paperback)
A Stray Drop of Blood by Roseanna White is a novel of epic proportions that blew me away. It beautifully wove together rich history, complex characters, deep spiritual content, romance, and a mesmerizing story all in an edgy and artistic package. This book is reminiscent of the highly acclaimed Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers, yet takes its own unique twists and turns through the Roman Empire and the lives of the early Christians.

This story delves deep into sin and the psychological consequences it creates. The author does not shy away from the dark realities of life. Instead she juxtaposes this darkness with the light of Jesus and the power of his shed blood in a way that is almost palpable and that touched me to the core. I loved the way author contrasted Greek and Roman philosophy and mythology with Hebrew theology. It has been a long time since I have found a novel this mentally stimulating.

I could go on all day about the elements of this book that I adored. Suffice to say that I give it my highest possible recommendation. This is a story that will stay with me for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Have Read To Date, March 12, 2010
This review is from: A Stray Drop of Blood (Paperback)
How do I put into words my thoughts on this absolutely WONDERFUL and AMAZING Biblical fiction book WITHOUT giving away spoilers? I just don't know where to begin! I suppose that I could say that this book was great and well written and all the usual things that come in a review. But this one, I just don't feel good about doing that.

I reviewed two books by Jill Eileen Smith not long ago, both of which were Biblical fiction, Abigail and Michal. However, as good as those ones were, A Stray Drop of Blood is so much BETTER than those! The feeling I got while reading of Abigail and her struggles as a slave then a mother and widow at such a young age, of the love and the tragedy among those she loved....it's so powerful! I am just in awe over this book. For it to have that kind of pull is just absolutely astounding!

Roseanna White brought us a wonderful debut novel. This is a book that is just too good to pass up(I know I keep saying that but I just can't say it enough!). It is at the TOP of my recommendation list! Her writing style is just too fascinating to forget, and the journey that she takes you on, through an epic era in time, and the way her words describe the intimate detail of living during those times was just beyond words. I felt a true part of this story and I felt God reach out and touch me with this book. P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L!!

While I recommend this book to everyone, my recommendation comes with a warning: take stock in tissues and make sure that you have lots of time set aside to read this and truly focus on this wonderfully captivating, complex story of a time long ago. The after thought from this book is just as powerful as reading the story itself!

Please, grab a copy of A Stray Drop of Blood TODAY! It is absolutely worth your time to read it and think about it afterwards. You won't soon forget these amazing characters or this author. Roseanna M. White is a 5 star author with a definite 5 star debut novel and deserves the highest of praises for the best book I have ever read to date (and I have read LOTS of great books!)!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stray Drop of Blood, February 27, 2010
This review is from: A Stray Drop of Blood (Paperback)
A Stray Drop of Blood is Roseanna M. White's captivating debut Biblical fiction novel. The story is set in Jerusalem and Rome around the time of Jesus' ministry.

Eight year old Hebrew girl Abigail is orphaned and sold into slavery by her stepfather. She is purchased by a Roman prefect as a companion for his Hebrew wife. Abigail is educated and raised as if she was their own daughter and her immense beauty is both a blessing and curse. Six years later her master's son, a Roman soldier, returns home after a six year absence and claims Abigail as his own before she can be given in marriage to her fellow slave and best friend. Abigail is forced to accept her new situation and feels abandoned by her God.

Tragedy befalls her Master's household and Abigail's encounter with Jesus on the day he is crucified both challenges her faith and transforms her life. Her faith is tested as she loses loved ones and cannot escape being treated as a Hebrew slave despite changes in her circumstances. A powerful love story unfolds and Abigail struggles with her seemingly futile desire to be with the man she loves.

A Stray Drop of Blood is an honest story that explores the best and worst of human nature. Realistic and compelling character's struggle with temptation and the differences between the Hebrew and Roman society create strong emotional conflict. The story is action packed, with masterful plot twists and the spiritual element flows seamlessly through the story. I would recommend A Stray Drop of Blood for those looking for a challenging and exciting Biblical fiction story.
