Book Description

Part 1 of the Touchstone trilogy.

On her last day of high school, Cassandra Devlin walked out of exams and into a forest. Surrounded by the wrong sort of trees, and animals never featured in any nature documentary, Cass is only sure of one thing: alone, she will be lucky to survive.

The sprawl of abandoned blockish buildings Cass discovers offers her only more puzzles. Where are the people? What is the intoxicating mist which drifts off the buildings in the moonlight? And why does she feel like she's being watched?

Increasingly unnerved, Cass is overjoyed at the arrival of the formidable Setari. Whisked to a world as technologically advanced as the first was primitive, where nanotech computers are grown inside people's skulls, and few have any interest in venturing outside the enormous whitestone cities, Cass finds herself processed as a 'stray', a refugee displaced by the gates torn between worlds. Struggling with an unfamiliar language and culture, she must adapt to virtual classrooms, friends who can teleport, and the ingrained attitude that strays are backward and slow.

Can Cass ever find her way home? And after the people of her new world discover her unexpected value, will they be willing to let her leave?

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Young Adult Science Fiction! June 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given a free copy of The Stray in exchange for a review. I must say right from the start that I am a huge fan of fantasy, not so big a fan of Sci-Fi. But I was taken from the start with this book. The main character, Cass, is very well written. An average teenage girl who finds herself alone on an uninhabited island that she soon determines is on another planet. She's got a great determination to survive, and when she's found and can't communicate the author makes it very believable that she'd just jump and run with complete alien strangers... odd as it sounds!

This is a great book, that I think anyone of any age would enjoy. But especially young adults who are just exploring new genres. I know that I will be looking for the second in the series and I will be purchasing it. The author creates believable characters and sitations that make you want to continue reading even when the book is over! I was so glad when I finished it today and found out she was publishing the second in the series today also! Happy reading everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read September 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was one of the best YA novels that I have read in a long time (librarian so I read a lot of them) very complex premise with the alien world but well done. Lots of characters and concepts but they are fit so well into this story that you don't feel lost or overwhelmed. Highly recommend for YA readers (no matter what their age is) Should appeal to both sf and fantasy readers. Cass is a "real" character with a positive outlook on life. I am looking forward to the next installment of her story.

4.0 out of 5 stars YA science fiction, hold the melodrama October 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
`Stray' is the first volume of the three-part diary of high school student Cassandra Devlin, who stepped through a wormhole to an alien world and became friends with psychic ninjas saving the universe from interdimensional ghosts. That's the gist of it anyway, though a short synopsis does no service whatsoever to this charming science fiction adventure. YA reader-friendly, `Stray' is partly an exploration of the tribulations of the refugee and partly a good old-fashioned superhero story, albeit told from the point of view of the underpowered kid sidekick.

Cazsandra, as the aliens call her, proves herself more useful than expected to the youthful Setari (the psychic science-ninjas with cybernetic telepathy). Cass is a clever and resourceful protagonist, but she's also lazy, often homesick and occasionally lacking in common sense (The cat! The cat!). Her struggles - to adapt to her new surroundings, to learn the local language and customs and to cope with being cooped up and monitored for science - are fascinating. Her realisation of what it will cost her to get back home is tragic.

`Stray' is written as a series of diary entries covering the first five months of Cassandra's journey. The diary format may not work for some but I found it helped to have the complexity of the setting and the small army of supporting characters parcelled out into digestible chunks. As a narrative device it also provides some distance for both Cass and the reader from the more traumatic aspects of her plight, making it a lighter and more accessible read than the homesickness misery trap other stranger-in-a-strange-land stories sometimes fall into. Highly recommended.

This book is tedious to start due to the diary format, but about halfway through the author seems to notice and starts adding more content so it becomes bearable. Read more
