I give it 4 stars vice 5 due to white light not bright enough for target ID. But that enhances battery life, which may be more important in a peacetime survival situation.

Readily available at $50 +/- $5. Ingenious little widget. Best used for signalling to somebody else where you are, identifying yourself, reading maps or documents, and picking your way along a trail when a white light is OK. White light is way too dim for use in target I.D. or aiming.

That said, this is gonna be my carry light 24/7. When I sack out it is gonna be within reach, set on red, so I can use it to take a leak without stepping on the dog or falling in a hole. Awake it will be set on white, helping me find stuff that rolls under the car or is behind the shoes in the closet or is making funny noises under the hood of my car.

The Sidewinder can NOT be left on "HIGH." Any time it is turned OFF, it resets to LOW. Certainly a good idea for hostile environments. If you hold down the ON/OFF button, it will cycle Low-Med-Med High-High ... and then back down, back up, down, etc. Entertaining for my grandchildren, but useless in a hostile environment. There is plenty of time to stop at whatever light level you want.

But, that is one more reason NOT to use this as a target identification/illumination light. When I need a seriously bright light, this will not be it. Probably use a Surefire series light for that.

Control is ingenious. One knob, pulled, pushed, and/or rotated 90 degrees at a time, provides about 20 options of lighting. I can do it day/night, with work gloves on.

Color of light is easy to remember. Green-Red-White-Blue detents at 12-3-6-9 O'Clock respectively. Batteries standard Double-A, AA, of any quality you care to use.

I've posted some pictures up above so you can see some of the well designed features Streamlight put into this milspec lamp. Milspec 810F requires that any "removable" body part be somehow attached so it can not become lost (i.e. battery door) - in this light it is tied to the light's interior with a steel cable to prevent it from falling. There are no markings that need a light to be seen or may wear off on how to insert the + and - ends of the batteries, but there are stampings in the case molding with a "+" in the center that indicate where the positive battery ends should go on each battery. This is a great feature if you must change two batteries in the dark by feel.

As for the LEDs, you are not likely to ever accidentally change colors because you must pull the color ring out of its detent and rotate it at least 90 degrees. Each position selects one of 4 LED colors. The pushbutton on the side has multiple functions. Double click it and it will flash the selected LED about 2x/ sec. Click once to turn it on or off. Hold it in and it walks you through the 4 brightness levels always starting at the most dim level and walking up to the brightest, then back down to the dim level. The intensity stays at the selected level as you rotate the color selector.

The package is waterproof, adjustable to almost any angle, and features gaskets on the battery compartment and lens over the LEDs. All the screws are driven into brass machine screw inserts for long life. If you want to reconfigure the clip, it can be unscrewed and moved to the opposite side of the case. There is also a lanyard hole, however a lanyard is not included to tie the lamp to your jacket and prevent loss.

As an owner of far too many flashlights, I assumed that this would be an interesting addition, but nothing special. It ended up being one of my new favorites! In a nutshell:

PROS:
Rugged construction.
Well balanced.
Very bright white and blue output.
Runs on a pair of standard "AA"s (this is really important to me)
A great emergency light with the "blinking" option.
Excellent options for lighting brightness and color.

NEUTRAL:
Waterproof. (Immersion depth is not indicated, does anybody know?)

CON:
Red and Green LEDs could be brighter.
Focus on Green/Red/Blue is a little diffuse for my tastes.

As the title implies, I really love this flashlight and now own three of them. Two are the civilian models with the white, red, blue, and green LEDs. One is the military model with an IR LED instead of the green. While they all function similarly, with the exception of the IR LED, there is a subtle difference between the two models which may impact which you decide to buy.

When you switch on the civilian model, it comes on in the BRIGHT mode and you can then step the light down. On the military model, when you switch the light on, it comes on in the DIMMEST mode and you can step the light up. It's a small difference, but depending on what you're buying this flashlight for it can be important and/or annoying. Obviously, if you want this for tactical reasons, buy the military model. If, like me, you want a darn good, bright, flashlight, don't be "tactic-cool," buy the civilian model.

My job requires me to leave the house in the very, very early morning hours which, in winter and DST, means in the dark. It's still dark when I get to work. So I used this flashlight daily. Before buying the Sidewinder I relied on, and loved, my Brinkman 2 AA flashlights. (Yes, flashlights. I must have about six of those.) I still like them, but all but two of those have been relegated to the drawer for backup purposes only. This baby replaced them all.

Everything about this flashlight is well thought out. It's easy to replace the batteries, even in the dark, because the polarity of the batteries is literally part of the case and the base is connected, even when opened, making it virtually impossible to lose unless you happen to have some wire cutters on you. It has a rugged, well built case and clip. I'd trust this with my life if it ever came up to that.
