5.0 out of 5 stars Bright + small = good!
If you've seen older LED flashlights you may be skeptical -- and rightly so, but the new Luxeon LEDs are different:

Believe it or not, this little light is almost as bright as a full sized MagLite 3-D cell, and it stays that way for 4 hours. It's like having a big maglite in a mini-mag body.

How is this possible? It uses a 1-watt Luxeon LED...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bright light
The light output is great, but I been having to click it on and off a half a dozen times to get it to stay on. Unscrewing the cap and stretching the spring helps until the next use. For $30 I was expecting this flashlight to be the most dependable one I own. Update: An email to the company and they promptly sent a replacement switch for free, which appears to be...

It uses a 1-watt Luxeon LED driven by a semi-regulated power supply, so unlike a lot of lights that start out bright and end up dim, this little light puts out a nearly constant beam for 4 hours. Best of all, it runs on inexpensive and easily available AA cells.

4.0 out of 5 stars C4 version brighter, but beam is less even, October 18, 2008

Streamlight's Jr. Flashlight is now in its third generation, with a brighter 'C4' LED (actually from Cree) inside rated at 55 lumens. The flashlight is visibly brighter than the previous two generations, both of which had a Luxeon LED (1st Gen rated at 30 lumens, 2nd Gen rated at 27 lumens but longer runtime than the 1st gen.)

The downside of this new 'C4' version is that it no longer retains the plastic collimating lens of the previous two generations, which was responsible for creating an evenly illuminated beam (by 'even' I mean a bright hotspot in the middle gradually tapering off to sidespill.) The optics for this third generation are much different; instead of a collimating lens there's a conical silver reflector which produces a more unevenly lit beam. The illumination is ringed, with brighter and darker regions, though definitely not as 'ringy' as the classic Mini Maglite. The unevenness is somewhat remedied by cutting out a small circle of light diffusion gel and inserting it into the reflector so it sits behind the front plastic lens, blending the slight unevenness together into a smoother beam. However, the collimating lens of the previous versions was simply better and I cannot imagine what possible logical reason was responsible for the switch to a reflector (a plastic polycarbonate lens vs. plastic aluminized reflector couldn't possibly be a significant difference in manufacturing cost...) Also, to accommodate the conical reflector in the front section of the flashlight, the new C4 version is actually longer than its prior length of 6.5", despite what the specs say: it's actually about 6 7/8" from front to the tip of the clickswitch.

As an engineer, this light is GREAT for inspections or just to keep on the control stand! It seems to be a long lasting light source, and easy to carry in your back pocket.

Give this one a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Bright!, February 16, 2009

This review is from: Streamlight 71500 JR C4 LED Flashlight, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
Don't let the name Jr. fool you; this is a serious little light. If your looking for a good flashlight thats as small as a mini maglite but's as bright as a 3d Maglite than this is it. Don't mess around with expensive lithium batterys and heavy D-cells, Streamlight has perfected this flashlight to work off regular AA cells!

Pros:

-Super Bright (brighter then 3d cell Maglite with new batterys)
-LED never burns out
-4 hour runtime
-Tactical switch
-Runs off common AA cells
-Streamlight "No Excuses" Warrenty

Cons:

-Pocket clip scrapes away aluminum on knurling
-Pocket clip can not slide all the way down towards head, so flashlight can not be worn on hat.
-Threading on tail cap is cheap
-Beam is a bit uneven, but it's not that noticible

Overall, a great light to carry in you pocket, as the Pros far out weigh the Cons. If you like this light, you should check out the Ultrastinger, it's 6 times as bright as the Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Flashlight, September 7, 2009

This review is from: Streamlight 71500 JR C4 LED Flashlight, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
Great flashlight. I have tried other LED lights to get the longer battery life and savings, but most of those provide diffuse light over a limited area and only for a short distance. This one really projects a bright light for a long distance. I have used it to replace my Maglite 'AA' flashlights for general use.

At around $30 it is pricey for a small flashlight, but I went back and bought a second one for other uses because I liked it so much.

I also like that it uses 'AA' batteries, which are easier to find than the 'AAA' batteries that a lot of the small LED flashlights use. This is important to me for emergency use. Plus, AA batteries last longer and cost the same as AAA.

The only negative comment I have about this flashlight is that the ON/OFF switch at the tail end of the flashlight has gotten bumped a few times while placing it into the supplied, nylon holster, accidentally turning it on; this could lead to unexpectedly running down the batteries if it was not caught in time.

This is one of the brightest & most durable flashlights my husband has ever owned. He is a self-employed farmer & carries the light everywhere with him. He wrapped electrical tape around the end so he could hold it in his mouth & use both hands when necessary(never know what situation he finds himself in at night when harvesting).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great flashlight, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Streamlight 71500 JR C4 LED Flashlight, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
Streamlight jr. was a good purchase. I am an electrician for a casino, and use it daily. It takes abuse. Have had it about a month now, and still using batteries that came with it. This light is BRIGHT and illuminates a great distance, easily 50 feet. It comes with a useful holster. At $28 it is a little pricey, but it is very good quality and worth the money.
