5.0 out of 5 stars Peace in a storm
This is one devotional you must have as you journey through life. Mrs Charles Cowman reminds the faithful follower of Christ that storms and trials that beset one actually come to make one more like Jesus.
In it there is refreshment for the soul who cannot seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as well as encouragement that the Master has it all planned out...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was
I had seen this devotional in a local bookstore at it was pricey. So I grabeed my phone & went on line at Amazon and found it at a much better price. When I got home to order it the cover looked different but everything else appeared the same. The shipping was as much as the book but still way lower price than the store. Got the book, not what I wanted. It's super old...

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace in a storm, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Streams in the Desert (Hardcover)
This is one devotional you must have as you journey through life. Mrs Charles Cowman reminds the faithful follower of Christ that storms and trials that beset one actually come to make one more like Jesus.
In it there is refreshment for the soul who cannot seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as well as encouragement that the Master has it all planned out for His Glory.
Above all else it tells the age old story - trials are not new, only recycled and are common to man.
In this devotional, each new passage gives one testimony that cheers the soul, that all is well, that all will be well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living Water--Streams in the Desert, May 17, 2007
This review is from: Streams in the Desert (Hardcover)
As a desert dweller, I know how important water is. Here, we never travel without a bottle of water, even to the grocery store. Christ said He came to give us living water--that is what this book does. It quenches the thirst of the soul--that inward longing we all have for more than what can be found in our material lives.
Over the years, I have read many daily devotionals. Streams in the Desert is without a doubt the most unique, and the most encouraging. First published in 1925, this book is a fountain of wisdom and encouragement. While the language might seem a bit old-fashioned to some, it is not a deterrent to the subject matter. The book is Bible-based, and quotes are from individuals, sermons, poems, stories, hymns, and of course, the Bible itself.
All of us deal with hardship in our lives--for me it is cancer. I use this book in tandem with my daily Bible reading and prayer.
Streams in the Desert comforts; it speaks to suffering, encourages faith, and would be an excellent gift for anyone who is going through difficult times.
Or for anyone who is thirsty for that living water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on Target, March 19, 2007

This review is from: Streams in the Desert (Hardcover)
Upon first receiving the contempory classsic hard back "Streams in the Desert" and reading the first few pages, I knew that it would be a treasure for a long, long time to come. As suggested by ABC's Robin Roberts on Good Morning America it is truly a keep sake. "Streams in the Desert" is a daily devotional that inspires, encourages and enable you to positively face the day. Truly and inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible daily devotional guide!!, March 20, 2007
By
This review is from: Streams in the Desert (Hardcover)
I bought this book a little late in the year but it didn't take me long to catch up on the days I had missed. I can't wait for each morning to read that day's message. I originally bought this book several weeks back, but my 13 year old daughter "borrowed" it from me before I had a chance to start reading it. I immediately bought another one and now she and I read the devotions seperately but it sparks conversation that she and I can discuss together. It's an incredible book for me and my teenage daughter!

I look at Good Morning America and Robin Roberts recommended this book as one of her favorite things. She told the story about her grandmother and value the book had on her life. I decided to purchase this book in order to have something too pass on to my kids/grandkids. I read this book everyday and truly enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars In this day and age, uplifting is good!, March 21, 2007
This review is from: Streams in the Desert (Hardcover)
I don't have alot of time in the day to just sit down and read something...but this is something that I hope will be passed down generation to generation as a "treasure". I do have a couple of minutes each morning to read a quick uplifting thought to keep my spirit happy for the day and give me something to think about...and hopefully pass on to others. This book should be a staple in every home.

The Bible is my #1 book. Created To Be His Helpmeet is my #2 book (if you are going to get married or in a marriage and need a little "help".) And Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert is my #3 book in the world. I am 42 and I LOVE to read!!! (But I love the Lord more, so it's gotta be Godly!!!) I've read hundreds and hundreds of books, if not thousands (Grace Livingston Hill is my fav. "fun" author.) and this book has been a MAJOR BLESSING to me!!! (A "paradigm-shifter", if you will!) This hardback version is not the type of devotional that provide lines to write your own stuff in, but you just read it, one per day if you like, but I read sporadically, like every other day on average, but I'll read 2 or 3 or 4 per day. Mrs. Cowman has given me SOOO MANY golden nuggets to live my life in a Godly manner! Like for instance "Many people...are forever worrying about difficulties they forsee in the future. They expect that God is going to make the way plain and open before them, miles and miles ahead; whereas He has promised to do it only step by step as they may need." (p. 14) Or this: "When the suffering soul reaches a calm, sweet carelessness, when it can inwardly smile at its own suffering, and does not even ask God to deliver it from suffering, then it has wrought its blessed ministry....oh the blessedness of being absolutely conquered! Of losing our own strength and wisdom, and plans, and desires, and being where every atom of our nature is like placid Galilee under the omnipotent feet of our [Lord] Jesus." (p. 271) If you liked that, you'll like this book. And after reading the first 250 p. of this book, I have come to the point where I agree!!! I have given 6 away so far, and the Lord has put it on my heart to make it sort of a ministry and to give it to more people. God bless you! D in CO
