I first purchased this book on the island of Okinawa, Japan in 1982. It has remained the best devotional reading I own. The book is a neat collection of short vignettes that are easy to read, but approach life's difficulties in such a way as to make you want to read the next one right away. This book offers hope in tough times. I can't believe a publisher hasn't had the good sense to reissue this book the way it was originally published in 1925. Some things are timeless.

This is a wonderful book for stressful and discouraging times in a person's life. I have found it to be a "light unto my path" in the darkness of sickness, relationship difficulties, doubt, grief, and during times of life's seeming futility. I recommend it to anyone to add to their own personal library of devotionals, or to give as an encouragement gift to those going through rough times. Volume I is the best, in my opinion, of the different issues, but all have invaluable insight into the purposes of suffering, struggling, and going forward in the Christian life. I have used my Vol. 1 for over 30 years over and over and have never been let down by it's wisdom.

If you are looking for a daily devotional, look no further. I am always amazed at how it continuously has something for what I am going through at the time. I have read it through many times and still learn new things every time. I truly believe the Holy Spirit works through this book to meet the readers needs. My mom started reading this book years ago, and still does today, and has passed it down to me, and I will to my daughters.
