This recording includes SEND IN THE CLOWNS & FUNNY VALENTINE,

Unlike a lot of Kenton discs which only feature the band, this album has a Kenton piano solo on every track. His style is minimalistic, but on these (mostly) ballads, it works perfectly. One of the most powerful, ballsy trumpet solos ever recorded is the one by John Harner on SEND IN THE CLOWNS. This album contains some of Kenton's best (popular) Big Band arrangements, played around colleges everywhere, including his classic Bill Holman arrangement of RHAPSODY IN BLUE, and Ken Hanna's arrangement of BODY AND SOUL. This disc is one for all Big Band archives. The fidelity of this CD Remaster is very good.

A Classic Set of Songs,

This is a GREAT compilation! "My Funny Valentine" simply shakes you to your core! Coming from someone who has played (or at least tried!) the bass trombone part to much of Kenton's work, this stands out as one of the best. A must-buy if you enjoy true power in a big band.

This is...without a doubt my favorite Kenton CD. From the opening "Send In The Clowns" to "My Funny Valentine" which will blow you away...this CD is non stop Kenton at his very best. It's a real pleasure to hear Kenton's piano solos...although they are minimal. What a terrific CD. I play it every day after work just to chill out. The trombone...sax...and trumpet solos are fantastic. If you really want to hear Kenton at his best...buy this CD. You will not be sorry...I promise. If you are not familiar with Kenton...this would be the perfect CD to become acquainted with Stan and his great orchestra.

I love Stan Kenton, though confess when he gets into some of the more far out things like City of Glass, he leaves me in the dust (or shards). Anyway, I am old enough (68) to have known the Kenton sound for a long time. Was lucky enough to see him live on Broadway (or it might have been Off Broadway, it was in San Francisco!) back in the 60's. Street of Dreams is absolutely the most beautiful album I think he did (though Adventures in Time is also a long time favorite), and I like the title song the best, though find things to love in all of the tracks. As an intro to Stan Kenton in this modern (less time to get into and understand something) time we live in, I would recommend this as the best Stan Kenton album to buy, and buy it from Amazon!

I have never been disapointed by a kenton recording! This Cd is no exception. There are the nay sayers amoung us that don't like jazz because they claim it is sloppy and unorginized. This is not the case with Kenton. His band and arangments have always been spot-on and the improvs are outstanding. Stan truly is the man. This is progressive jazz at it's best.

This album represents the best of Stan Kenton arrangements. The melodies are right from the American Song book. The chords and harmonies are interesting but never far away from the standard chording of the pieces. For example, My Funny Valentine is arranged in what can only be described as a hushed loving way like a whisper in the ear of one you love. If you love the old songs with some really neat chords you will be happy with this album. And if, by chance, you are a fan of far out Stan, this album will give you a solid home base as a comparison.
