5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun game...but not with PSP analog stick or D-Pad, March 1, 2006
By
Kenny Kenny "Kenny" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (Video Game)
The game is great...good graphics (better than original), little to no loading times, players move almost like the original alpha 3. You will definitely enjoy it if you are a fan of the street fighter series. MAKE SURE you buy directly from Capcom's website because they are giving away a free street fighter game pad that attaches to your PSP D-pad. It is IMPOSSIBLE to play without it. I've been playing street fighter for over 15 years. With the orignal PSP D-pad, I can only get Ken's dragon punch to come out 30% of the time. The analog stick is slightly better, but forget about using it in a crazy combo. It's also super hard to get any of the SUPERS to come out with the original PSP controls. Basically, you'll have a difficult time with anything that involves a diagonal movement. It's very frustrating when you are trying to do a jump-in, but end up jumping straight up in the air instead of up and forward.

I still gave this game 5-stars because it's not Capcom's fault that the PSP D-pad is not made for fighting games. But make sure you get the game pad from Capcom...you will enjoy the game a lot more.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was fun then, and it's fun now!, February 18, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (Video Game)
Chances are, you've already played Street Fighter Alpha 3 before. And because Street Fighter is such a well known fighting series, rather than pound into you what you probably already know, let's take time to establish what this game does differently than most other fighters. It IS a port, but it's a reworked port. Not just a straight over port.

First of all, there are 40 different characters that you can choose from. This makes Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX one of the most populated fighting games of all time. Each character also has his or her own backstory and set of dialogue. That alone makes this game a bit more worthwhile than most other games where you basically play through the same story but with a different character. Here, each character has their own unique story.

Characters also fight with three different "isms" if you will. The simple stylings of the x-ixms will remind you of Street Fighter II, while A-isms give you plenty of powerful moves and V-isms let you use custom combos.

The gameplay is about the same as your traditional 2D fighter. They throw in a bit more, though. Such as a guard gauge for players who do nothing but guard, and there are also recovery moves that prevent you from taking more damage than necessary.

It's in the controls however, where I found a bit of a problem. Some moves are harder than they have to be to pull off on the PSP. Perhaps because instead of porting over the exact same controls, they're changed up a little. Some moves require you to press multiple buttons at the same time. This sounds easy and no problem at all, but mix it with the D-Pad and we've got some problems. For the most part, it's easy to adapt to and most people won't have a problem with it. But for those who were in love with Street Fighter Alpha to begin with... it takes time to adjust. To get it perfectly clear in your head that the controls aren't the same. After a while this isn't much of a problem at all, of course.

There are several different modes. The basic Arcade Mode and Versus Mode, of course, but there's also some modes that are more fun. Such as the Dramatic Battle. This is simply a two against one battle. Either you've got a computer ally or you're by yourself. The Tag Team mode in this game probably could've been done a little better. It just feels like Dramatic Battle all over again, to be honest with you.

There's also a world tour mode which imposes strategy on your part. Certain characters you face will have weaknesses and strengths. It's pretty fun because you'll gain experience and level up as you go. Because of this element you'll find world tour mode to be worthwhile.

Even better, you can hook up with friends and play. Thanks to the wireless support of the PSP you can play against your friends really easily. However, you can't go online, and with a fighter as big as Street Fighter, that would've been really nice to have.

Street Fighter is brilliant looking. It's 2D graphics look even better on the PSP. It goes to show that just because you're capable of 3D doesn't mean it's the only beauty. These backgrounds and drawn characters look just as good as ever! They're also really bright and colorful. So much that they draw the player in. Some of it does look dated, but if you're a true gamer, that won't bother you too much. The sound effects and everything are fantastic too, despite the fact that I could've gone without the announcer.

It's a great game. It always was and always will be. If you want some nostalgia, pick this up. You'll love it, I'm sure.

However, on a closing note, I can't help but admit that once again, the PSP has received another port/re-release. All of the PSP's best games right now seem to be ports and re-releases. And this is no different. It's a great game. A fantastic game, but is it too much to ask for an original title?

The Good
+Classic addictive Gameplay
+LOADS of characters
+The ability to raise characters is really cool and addictive
+Play with your friends!

The Bad
-Some of the controls take time to get used too...
-No online play.
-You can't help but admit that it's just another port. A GREAT port, but the PSP needs something that's... you know, an original title. It's a game, but once again, the PSP is receiving a great game that's already been done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Slick!, February 10, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (Video Game)
This game is a perfect conversion of Street Fighter Alpha 3's Arcade, Playstaion, and Dreamcast versions, with all of the game modes that were included in all those versions, plus that huge addition of Wi-Fi, the ability to play wirelessly with other PsP wielding players. Not only that, but it includes the huge extra mode that I was personaly surprised at seeing in the Playstation version, World Tour Mode, in which you build up 1 to 9 characters in an RPG style level up system, and customise them with different abilities unlocked along the way. Once the character is to your liking, and saved, you can load them on the character selection screen for use in any mode you can fight in, but, just like in the original home versions, only 6 of the 9 characters can be loaded. On top of having all the original content and some PsP exclusive content, you get 4 PsP exclusive characters as well. Eagle from Street Fighter 1 and Capcom Vs. SNK 2, Maki from Capcom Vs. SNK 2, Yun from Street Fighter 3 and Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution. Considering all the content cramed into this tiny, extraordinary machine, the graphics hold up unbelievably, and the gameplay is even more quick and slick than the Dreamcast Version. In fact, the only flaw I have with this game, is the PsP has only 1 shoulder button on each side, and I never used the L shoulder buttons on the PSX version, but that doesn't change my rating score. Something else cought my attention, as well. When I was watching a clip online, Rolento tagged Vega into the match just like X-men Vs. Street fighter. I have the game, but somehow didn't catch any info on that ability, and I don't know how I missed it. If anyone has info on how to tag, let me know, because if you can actually do that, than it is the edition to the gameplay that excites me most of all. This game is a must have for any fighting game fan, and definetly taps into the potential of the sleak, revolutionary system that is the Sony Playstation Portable. Thank you for reading. - Gambit
