5.0 out of 5 stars Great value if you don't already own the games September 18, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
It's difficult to believe that Street Fighter (going by the first game in the series, not by Street Fighter II that arguably lit the Street Fighter fire) is 25 years old. I remember fighting to find a place, 21 years ago that had the SF II arcade cab. I remember the lines of people waiting to play. It was the beginning of a fighting game revolution.

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection (SF 25 C from now on) is expensive when you look at the surface of it. In terms of games, you receive:

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD - this is the game that was released in 2008. You can play the classic version of the game, with the same timings and so on that you were accustomed to, along with the lower resolution artwork we all grew up with, or you can use the HD remix mode where all of the sprites and backgrounds were redone in HD and play in the HD remix mode with slightly different timings. $15 on Live/PSN. This is a DLC code.

Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition - The final release of the third game in the Street Fighter series, with additional On-line match up capability. The unfortunate part is that this game didn't get the same loving recreation in HD that Super SFII Turbo HD remix received, so the graphics are kind of muddy. But the animation was groundbreaking at the time. Silky smooth. Sure, newer 2D games on updated systems (Guilty Gear, Blaz Blue come to mind) have HD and smooth animation, but this game, on its release in '97, was a powerhouse. $15 MSRP on Live/PSN. This is a DLC code.

Super Street Fighter IV Arcade - You get the game and ALL of the costume DLC. First came Street Fighter IV, that rebooted a series many people had fond memories of but Capcom had let fall by the way side. The game was arguably a fighting game masterpiece. In typical Street Fighter fashion, Capcom put out an updated version of the game, adding the Super prefix, which added characters and backgrounds and gameplay tweaks. This brought Street Fighter IV to perfection in my opinion. MSRP $30 for the game and another $15 for all of the costumes. Costumes are DLC codes.

Street Fighter X Tekken - This is Capcom's take on the fighting game cross up of this decade (last century was SNK vs Capcom/Capcom Vs SNK). You get tag team fighting using a Capcom centric fighting engine. You also get all of the DLC constumes for this one as well. $40 MSRP (can be had for $20 new currently) with the additional character DLC, $20 and the extra costume DLC, $5. Costumes/characters are DLC codes.

For those keeping track, on the games alone, you'd be looking at spending ~$140 MSRP for all this stuff (reality is, you can probably score it all for ~$100).

On top of all of this, you receive, in HD on Blu Ray (this time it's not just some HD 360 video disc, thankfully, unlike the SF IV fiasco):

A wonderful documentary that gives you some insight into the SF world and focuses on fans.

Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV Anime, in HD on Blu Ray. The first was only available as part of the SF IV collection, the latter was only available in Japan as a 360 DLC from what I can tell. You can't just buy either of these anymore.

THEN you get Strett Fighter II Anime in on Blu Ray. And it's the censored version, sorry Chun-Li fans. That drops the value of the set a little, in my opinion. There is one MASSIVE issue I see with this particular release. It is NOT in HD, which is OK, but, it's also letter and pillar boxed... so it shows on your screen as a postage stamp basically. Unacceptable, but as they are celebrating the games, I guess they spent more time making sure those were right?

And on top of that, you get the entire run of the Street Fighter TV Series. OK... this wasn't that great, I admit, but hey, it's only included here! This is also ONLY in standard definition.

This would add I don't know, what, maybe $20 to the set, looking past the lack of Japanese language and the pillar/letter boxed version of SF II (wish they had given us a proper HD version, even with just English!)

IMPORTANT NOTE - THERE IS NO JAPANESE LANGUAGE OPTION ON THE ANIMATED FEATURES, AT ALL. This is disappointing for me, and drops another $10 in value, but everything else included makes up for this.

On top of all of this, you get what is easily my personal favorite part of the set. You have an 11 disc audio CD collection of music from all of the games, or at least one of each series proper:

Street Fighter - original game OST
Super Street Fighter II - original game OST
Street Fighter Alpha OST - original game OST
Street Fighter III Third Strike OST (includes the online extra music)
Super SF IV Arcade - character themes
SF x Tekken OST - same as Japanese collector's CD as best I can tell
2 CDs worth of FAN MADE remixes

Much of this was never available domestically. We're talking Japanese only releases, if they were ever released. It would be nice to get music from every game in the entire series, but heck, this is a really great set of music regardless. For me, this made the price of the set worth it above all else.

THEN, on top of all of that, you get a really, really nice Ryu statue that lights up. It all comes housed in a nice quality collector's box. You also get a kind of silly embroidered black belt, a replica of Ryu's belt. And the final icing on the cake is a tremendous artbook. It's not very lengthy, but it's a high quality gathering of FAN art, not Capcom production art.

They certainly pulled a lot of good stuff together for the set. They also, most definitely, dropped the ball on some of it. The animated parts, with the exception of the TV series, either lack Japanese language (not a big deal for most, but I am pointing it out) or in the case of SF II, painfully encoded. The two SF IV OVAs look great, no question. The Animated series... well, it's not good and I guess I'm glad I own it regardless.

They also drop the ball with the DLC. You are NOT getting SF II or SF III on a disc. You also don't get any of the extra costumes/characters on a disc. In my mind, Capcom should have created proper physical media for it all, but my guess is that part of this is the limitations in place so that we can still play with other people who own the games.

If you don't own the games, this is a great set. If you want the soundtracks at a semi-reasonable price, this is a great set. If you want the Animated movies the way they should be presented, dual language and in HD, you will be disappointed.

If you own the games, it may still be worth it for the soundtracks.

What would have made this set amazing, and probably doubled the price, is if they included every edition of every game in the set. From SF, to SF IV, including the Alpha games. But that wasn't to be and they did an OK job honoring a great series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great games and music, but the video content is lacking. September 20, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I pre-ordered this set when I first heard about it and Amazon had it posted. Overall it is a great value, even if you own one or more of the games. The statue is very, very nice. On par with the Arkham City Batman, but this one lights up(batteries included!)! The games form a current retrospective of the series through SFxTekken, and all of the DLC is a great value. Although entering 9 DLC codes is a pain. I recommend copying and pasting directly to xbox.com to save time. The music is enough to make you sick and is hit or miss. The artbook has some great pieces in it and is not one of those "mini sized" art books many collector's editions have these days. The replica belt will probably stay in the box unless you plan on being Ryu for Halloween or cosplaying.

My biggest reason for getting this set was SFxTekken + DLC, and for the plethora of blu ray video content. SFxTekken is fantastic, but the video content was extremely disappointing. SFII The Animated Movie(censored version) is presented in a letter and pill boxed format in non-HD DVD quality. The 2 anime features from SF4 and SSF4 are at least full screen, as is the old USA television series!

The overall presentation of the set is very nice, and the box is very well done. I am happy with this set for the price, although not getting an HD version of The Animated Movie was extremely disappointing! If you don't have most of the games included, and love the Street Fighter series as much as I do, then this set is well worth it. Just hold on to your DVD uncut version of the Animated Movie!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by all those discs September 20, 2012
By Arthur
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
first off I want to get the good out of the way. It's Street Fighter. Lots and Lots of Street fighter. the soundtracks are nice to have and the Ryu Statue is very cool

that's all I can say good.

the bad is you only get 2 game discs. everything else is DLC. this hardly makes this a "collection". I'm sorry if you are going to release something like this every game and every piece of content should be on a disc to play not DLC!!!! in a few years when PSN and XBLA is gone you will be left with codes that were worthless and no game to show for it. I don't mind buying the DLC form the service. I get that I know what I am getting into there. but when you promise a "collection" then I should have it on psychical media!

I bought this and I am extremely disappointed in the fact it is all DLC codes.

Do not get this unless you have not played/bought any of these game before or if you are a die hard fan.

Lightning Deal only for Xbox!? LAME
Yeah. I agree. I would prefer it on PS3 as well since I have all my other fighters on PS3 and actually have a PS3 stick, but I bought it anyway coz it is still a good price for such an awesome collector's set.

Only 4 street fighter games!?
Its a predictable move. Its no different than special edition movies that get released by the movie studios. They purposely hold back content so they can release even better versions later down the road. Just follow the money. Almost every decision in the business world revolves around money.... Read more
