This comprehensive guide is meant for parents, teachers, police, and community members who encounter gangs in their daily activities. Sachs, since 1978 a counselor and a probation officer at a Chicago juvenile detention center, first describes the history and evolution of street gangs. He explains the allure of gangs, detailing what causes kids to join and what might cause them to leave (if they can). Most important, using copious illustrations, Sachs describes "identifiers"?symbols, jewelry, graffiti, and specific styles of clothing. He details gang language, including a glossary of terms, and describes (with illustrations) hand signs. Sachs then explains what the family, schools, and other community agencies can do to limit the spread of gangs. He also describes various ways to help kids escape the gang world. This book is excellent for any parent, teacher, counselor, law enforcement officer, attorney or corrections officer. I recommend it highly. If you are located in the mid-west this book will be of particular significance. Not only does this book adress the gang problem, it shows drawings and photos of gang symbols, jewelry, attire and the like. Wondering if your kid is a gang member? Read this book! Bravo to my colleague Steve Sachs.

I found this book to be an excellent resource about gang identification and what society and individuals can do to address the gang problem. Friendly, easy to read format and lots of useful illustrations. Most gang books I've found in libraries are theory, this is a "hands on" publication which reads easily. Books like 8 Ball Chick is good reading to find out WHAT gang members do and how they think. This book is useful to IDENTIFY gang members in the schools and neighborhoods. Also had an interesting section of how to decipher graffiti.

A realistic approach to teaching parents and schools, particularly in the suburbs, the dangers of gangs. Parents who are in "denial" about gangs in the burbs should look at the pictures---then look around in their neighborhoods. Author Sachs gives you the facts in an easy to read format. Highly Recommended!
