MUST READING,
This review is from: Street Gang Awareness: A Resource Guide for Parents and Professionals (Paperback)
This book is excellent for any parent, teacher, counselor, law enforcement officer, attorney or corrections officer. I recommend it highly. If you are located in the mid-west this book will be of particular significance. Not only does this book adress the gang problem, it shows drawings and photos of gang symbols, jewelry, attire and the like. Wondering if your kid is a gang member? Read this book! Bravo to my colleague Steve Sachs.

I found this book to be an excellent resource about gang identification and what society and individuals can do to address the gang problem. Friendly, easy to read format and lots of useful illustrations. Most gang books I've found in libraries are theory, this is a "hands on" publication which reads easily. Books like 8 Ball Chick is good reading to find out WHAT gang members do and how they think. This book is useful to IDENTIFY gang members in the schools and neighborhoods. Also had an interesting section of how to decipher graffiti.

A realistic approach to teaching parents and schools, particularly in the suburbs, the dangers of gangs. Parents who are in "denial" about gangs in the burbs should look at the pictures---then look around in their neighborhoods. Author Sachs gives you the facts in an easy to read format. Highly Recommended!

A book for all parents.,

This review is from: Street Gang Awareness: A Resource Guide for Parents and Professionals (Paperback)
As a single mother of 2 teenage sons, this book has been very useful to me. The author uses a lot of photographs and drawings which show gang jewelry, clothing, hats, grafitti, etc., to show parents, teachers and others what to look for to determine if a young person is involved with gangs, or has more than just a passing interest. Not only did I determine that my sons were not involved with gangs (thank goodness!) I used the information to be aware about the dangers of my sons going to other schools for different events wearing the wrong logo and sport teams clothing that gangs have adopted. The author suggests to parents that their children wear nuetral clothing, which makes good sense. The whole book seems to be filled with good sense. When the author discusses and rationalizes the banning your children's use of pagers, searching your child's bedroom, (it's your house! you pay the rent!) he adds a personal story that's a real eye opener. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has children. Schools, and police departments will benefit from this book also. The author gives practical solutions and ideas to help combat the gang problem. I also found the gang / slang glossary very interesting.

OUTSTANDING!,

This review is from: Street Gang Awareness: A Resource Guide for Parents and Professionals (Paperback)
An excellent resource for teachers, parents, and law enforcement. Good use of illustrations that compliment the text. The author pulls no punches when addressing parents and their responsibilities, so that was a refreshing change. Not a technical or theory oriented book, but more of a "hands on" reference.

Blows the lid off STREET GANGS and their secrets!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Street Gang Awareness: A Resource Guide for Parents and Professionals (Paperback)
This heavily illustrated book strips away the secrets that street gangs have enjoyed for so long. I have worked as a field officer for a mid-city probation department for 12 years and I have yet to find as a complete book on gangs and what police, parents, teachers, correctional officers, and probation officers should look for to determine if a young person is involved with gangs. This is a "hands on" book that goes into detail on gang symbols, slang, colors, sports team affiliations, grafitti (and how to read it) etc. This book also illustrates what communities, parents, and schools can do to combat the gang problem. As a probation officer I often refer to the book during the course of my job. I also have bought several other copies to loan out to parents and schools (to loan to parents), and so far, the book has proved to be a big help. It doesn't dwell in gang theory but seems to be written as though Mr. Sachs was in the room with you, having a conversation. I'm surprised a book like this hasn't been written before. Chapter 13 has 16 steps that parents can do on the homefront, and is worth the price of the book alone. Street Gang Awareness should be in every school, police department and library.

For my online class on rehabilitation services this book was an eye-opener, and so scary. It is such a good resource guide for parents and any professional who works with kids and gangs. As a parent it can help you identify signs of gangs and gives lots of information that I hope you will never need personally. This book helps to expose the secrets of signs and symbols and how gangs identify each other. There is a section on the lure of the gang and why kids join, and how hard it is to leave a gang. If you need this, get this book, it will open your eyes.

GREAT GANG IDENTIFICATION BOOK!,

This review is from: Street Gang Awareness: A Resource Guide for Parents and Professionals (Paperback)
Sach's book has been used here at our local high school for the last several years, when one of the city's juvenile probation officer brought it to identify a piece of school graffiti. Bought several copies for the teacher's lounge / library. A welcomed addition! Great illustrations, author knows his gangs. Excellent chapter written just for schools----includes an assessment tool to evaluate gang infiltration within your own school. Would highly recommend for anyone who comes into contact with gangs.
