The "Street" books are a necessity before going to live in a country where a language is spoken. Even the Champs-Elysees audiojournals' "man on the street" interviews stick to standard usage; this will give you a leg up on everyday expressions, and the slang is carefully restricted to expressions that don't go out of date quickly.
