4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good...
I liked it! It was sort of dissapointing that there was no romance, but I didn't expect any. It was pretty bloody, like Sandry's book, but it didn't make me throw up or anything. It isn't Tamora' Pierce's best book, but I didn't really expect that...Alanna and Daine can't be surpassed.I thought it was funny in some parts when Briar flirted with a girl, cause I didn't...

3.0 out of 5 stars okay for a timekiller, but not my favorite
I found this book rather violent, the characters (with the exception of Evvy) not particularly engaging, and the world creation a bit over-the-top (you could see Pierce trying too much). The dialogue left a lot to be desired. There is a lack of psychologically convincing characters. I don't think this is Pierce at her best, as I have read other work by her. If you are a...

LOL. I loved Evvy! She is so spunky and determined. This is a great book to read if you liked the Circle of Magic and Tamora Pierce, who is my favorite author!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Briar's character!!!, June 11, 2001

I have always thought Briar was a very great character despite him being a boy. And me a girl. I really don't care what a book is about even if it's kinda bloody. Like this book. Tamora is a gifted author who can capture a character in twisted plots where they end up nlowing things up. I don't care if no one likes my review but I think this is one of Tamora's best books since Sandry's book and Briar's book. Briar having to teach a young girl when ( this is what I have noticed) he doesn't really like girls. This Book reminds me of Magic Steps. Because in both books the young mages have to become teachers to younger mages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Briar the Plant Mage at fourteen!!!, April 30, 2001

It's been four years since Briar Moss left Winding Circle Temple in SummerSea . Now he is in Chammur. There he meets Evvy. She is a 10 year old girl who uses her magic to polish stones for a local merchant. When Briar try's to talk to her she flees. Finally , she gives in and Briar starts teaching her about her magic. Then, a local gang called the Vipers here Briar say that Evvy has stone magic so they try to kidnap her to make a profit on her ability. In the meantime the Vipers are trying to take over Camelgut territory with the help of a rich noble. She gives them weapons and the Vipers start a war with the Camelguts. I won't spoil the whole book. All I can say is that this book is right up there with all of her other wonderful, marvelious, outstanding, terrific quartets. I highly reccomend this book. Only if you can manage complex plots and many confusing parts. I hope many of you out there have lots of acadimic ability!!!!!! Farewell!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, March 13, 2001
Liked it a lot, Briar is funnier than Sandry. He totally has no idea how to start teaching... Thought it was introspective and brings home some serious facts about gangs. It's an adventure, but if it talked a bit more about the circle students and how they are making out, it would be better. A good fast read overall...

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, May 26, 2001

I'll keep this short. I love all of Pierce's books and can't wait until the next. This book focused on Briar and his past. He faces his past as a gang member as he teaches Evvy. He reevaluates how good a gang really his. He finds someone else to care about besides the girls and his teachers in Winding Circle. I think that it was a great book and read it in one hour and a half. (I am a speedy reader) I absolutely loved it and I can't wait until the next one.=p

5.0 out of 5 stars from the mage of Missouri, March 12, 2001

This book is great! When Briar discovers that there is a girl named Evvy who lives in all these tunnels who is a stone mage he finds out he must teach her as a student, he also discovers that there is a rich lady's toy gang named the Vipers who is after her so they can break into places and get all the jewels in the place and they will do anything to get her, he must protect her. Rosethorn is actually nice to her and they end up living with her. Briar makes friends with a gang called the Camelguts and helps them when they are being beat to death by the Vipers, and how do they repay them? by joining the Vipers because they don't wanna fight any more! In the Circle of Magic Quartet, Tris's Book they cover a pirate fleet with plants, but it takes all 4 of them, but in this book Briar destroys a giant mansion all by himself. You find out that their teachers have given them all tokens in these books to show that they can train as adults, but Briar can sence they aren't telling him something about the tokens cause everyone obeys them if they show them the tokens, I think it shows that they are great mages like their teachers. I'll leave the rest to you.

Briar and Rosethorn are in the city of Chammur,in Briar's old home land of Sotat. One day in the market he sees Evvy,a "street rat"polishing stones for a merchant.Briar can see that she has stone magic, and resolves to track her down and find a teacher for her .This means getting her to trust him.Meanwhile Briar is caught up in gang warfare, even though he promised not to go back to his old way of life. One of the gangs wants Evvy to join them,so she can track down hidden jewels for them.In the end he must choose between what he thinks he needs to,and what he knows he has do.This book opeons up a completely different side of Briar not seen in the previous one.

5.0 out of 5 stars really liked it, November 17, 2001
By A Customer
i didn't really like Squire, but this book made up for it totally. Tammy's books are getting a bit more gruesome, but i don't care. I really like this new series because we find out more about different kinds of magic. it's obvious that each of these books is going to be about our 4 favorite mages getting students and coming to terms with the students and themselves. I really like Briar, I think he's totally cool even though everyone's ragging on Tammy cuz he's a boy. So what? It adds a little variety to the series. Let me tell you, having a series with 4 girls would make me gag. I may be female, but I find something without even a marginal bit of a male point of view boring if it's supposed to be in third person. There are plenty of well-developed female characters in this story to keep most TP fans interested anyway. Notice how in Alanna there were a few times when it was from a male point of view? didn't that add a little more color to the story? Having the entire series on girls focuses just on their problems and i like reading about boy's problems, too, since i already have girl problems. one thing that made me dislike protector of the small was that there were less POVs. the immortals series kept me hooked because there was a lot more action, even though the focus was mainly on the female protagonist once again. This book may have no romance but it more than makes up for it with the mystery, intrigue, and adventure. a superb read! i liked it much better than magic steps and am looking forward to the next book in the series! oh yeah, and don't you just love when we have the POV from the baddie in the story? I just love books that have that! read, people! order now!

5.0 out of 5 stars major Tamora Pierce fan, February 20, 2006
A Kid's Review
I loved this book. Briar is my favorite charecter, so maybe that's why I loved this book so much. Unlike SOME people, I am not going to give away the ending and stuff. Briar, after training as a mage for 4 years, is traveling with his teacher, Rosethorn. while he is traveling, he meets Evvy,a girl who is apparently a stone mage. He must teach her how to controll her magic and avoid other gangs so he can live. A rich lady decides to kidnap Evvy, and Briar gets mad... Anyways this is totally my favorite book that Ms.pierce has written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner, November 3, 2002

"greengoldfairy" (London, England (but only until August 18th!)) - See all my reviews
STREET MAGIC, the second book of Pierce's The Circle Opens quartet, is a story which ought to satisfy all of her fans and leave them asking for more. Still far from being one of Tamora Pierce's best books, STREET MAGIC continues her trend of bringing the books in The Circle Opens quartet to a more mature level.

Briar Moss and his teacher Rosethorn have traveled to the city of Chammur, where they are employed to revive the plants dying in the "tired" earth. It is while he is visiting one of the open Bazarrs there that Briar comes across Evvy, a young street-rat who in unknowingly in possession of stone magic. As with Sandry in MAGIC STEPS, Briar suddenly finds himself responsible for Evvy when the only other stone mage in the city flatly refuses to teach Evvy, or at least to do so in an acceptable manner. On the side, Briar must deal with the escalation of a multi-gang war going on throughout the city.

As I said, this is far from being one of the best books by Tamora Pierce, but I found it to be not half-bad. I like how she is bringing more dimensions to the lives of the four Winding Circle Mages, and making her stories more complex, mature, and different.
