4.0 out of 5 stars That cold black pearl
This story is about a pimp named Earl who had things going his way, but one event lead to another and his world came crumbling down around him. Unlike other stories or the such you may read or see about pimps, Goines gave this one some depth. He wasn't some fast-talking cat who just wasted money and used women. It was different, because he exposed a vulnerability there...

I've always heard great things about Donald Goines. If they are true, they are not fairly represented in Street Players. This book reminded me that I should not be an author; because AVERAGE WRITING is not worth the time it takes to read it, or write it.

Basically the book was about a pimp named Earl, and how he had everything. But when a horrible incident happens it changes his life for the worst. This book has so many twist and turns that you will want to keep reading it.This book was good. This book lets you see what was going on in that time and how they had to stuggle to get where they are.I would reccommend this book to any one who wants stay glued to a book. So far I am on the verge of reading all of his books, and i suggest other readers do the same.

The 4th title I've read by Goines...regrettably one of his weaker efforts. The story ended so abruptly I believe the author was being hounded by his publisher or needed some heroin (Goines was addicted for many years) or both. Still some of the descriptions of steeet life were quite raw and vivid, reminding me of Whoreson or Dopefiend, two of his more vital efforts. An easy read, but one of his lesser constructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Street Players, December 31, 2007
This book is magnificent! It has all the action, all the drama, and all the suspense you need. And the best part is the ending, it throws you for a big loop. The bonus sneek preview in the back of the book was great also!!

Thanks for the good read,
Angela Jones

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, December 8, 2004

This was the first of two books that I have read so far by Doanld Goines. An Associate of mine had introduced some of his novels to me but before then I have never heard of him . I thought the book "Street Players" was pretty good. I would have never expected the end to end the way that it did but when we read stories of people living those types of lifestyles rather it be fiction or not, the end result always remain the same. After reading a bit of information on this author, I was curious as to why he lead the lifestyle that he did considering that he came from a middle class background. I plan to pick up a copy of "low road" which is the life story of Donald Goines by Eddie Allen to find out why.
