5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Album You Never Heard August 18, 2000
By Greg C
Format:Audio CD
This is, quite simply, a masterpiece. Although perhaps inextricably linked to its moment in time (1969), what a moment that was! This album is an epic, an adventure, stirring, moving, enlightening, thought-provoking and much more. Julie Driscoll sings like a kind of beautiful and demented revolutionary angel, Brian Auger is (as always) right on point, and it simply baffles me that this mind-blowing album isn't much better known. People, you need this music! It's rock, it's jazz, it's gospel, they incorporate Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Oscar Brown Jr., the Staple Singers and Laura Nyro material, the vocal and instrumental work is top-notch, and the whole thing hangs together beautifully. You will never ever forget this album after hearing it, and it's about time it received a proper CD reissue. Order this absolute treasure pronto....

I've been searching for this album for a long time, hoping someone would recognize the genuis it represents! Now, finally someone has had the wisdom to remaster and re-release this absolutely stunning creation! The original Brian Auger and the Trinity featured former model Julie Driscoll on vocals, where later Oblivion Express albums did not.
She's got that perfect posh bird voice, with crystal clear ennunication that makes good use of its bell-like tones, and 3 octave range on When I Was Young, drawing out vowels: "When I was a young girl, I used to seek pleaaaa suuuure." Another stellar track would have to be Indian Rope Man; whose artful vocal arrangement boasts clever circular breathing and pauses between words that function as an percussive instrument of their own. The upbeat composition has a funkily rocking beat that cranks like nobody's business.
Feliciano's Light My Fire benefits from an imaginative reworking, with Auger's jazz-inflected rock, and Hammond B3 Leslie organ-driven rock creating something fresh and new from the guitar-based original. I've Got Life is another very strong track that benefits from the addition of Driscoll on lead vocals, and is as powerful as anything here. Everyone is at the top of their game here, and what sounded new and even daring way back then, still sounds brilliant and well-conceived to this very day.
The recording is crystal clear. I guess my only gripe would be, that given the CD format, and room for at least 4 or 5 more tracks, that a couple bonuses weren't thrown in. Still, trust me when I say, this is an amazingly good CD, one that will find its way frequently onto your play lists and wil serve as a compliment to other Oblivion Express music in your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary mood piece July 8, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Bravo! Driscoll, Auger, Thacker & Ambrose join forces on that outstanding record, one of the finest fusions of rock, jazz and blues I've ever heard. As one reviewer said, "Everyone is at the top of their game here": Driscoll vocal's are crystal-clear singing from heaven, an english sister for almighty Grace Slick, and the instrumental layed back by the guys is at once steaming and very complex. The arrangements are fantastic, and all the execution is top-notch musicianship. Bravo!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real classic! October 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first heard this album in the 60s while stationed in Greece. Thought I would never see it again until
I realized that I could order it on Amazon. It is musical genius! The band and the vocals are just super. Hope you can still get it by the time this review is written.
