Editorial Reviews

"Streets is Watching" the movie gives the viewer an insightful overview of the life and times of rap superstar Jay-Z. It steers you away from the traditional dance and party scenes that are so common in today's music videos, and takes you straight to the origins of his lyrics. The streets travel with Jay-Z, Dame Dash (Label's CEO) and Kareem "Biggs" Burke (Label's COO) into this ghetto adventure that's both fascinating and believable. The concept coupled with humorous anecdotes, lost video footage and a brand new score from the soon to be released "Streets is Watching" soundtrack, is perfect for home entertainment.

The entire soundtrack was tight, but track two made it complete and then some (thanks to RELL). Love for Free is HOT!

The soundtrack to the independent movie, Streets Is Watching, proves the reason why Roc-A-Fella was leading the pack with releases like this. As seven of the twelve tracks featured Jay-Z, he forcefully taken control of the situation. As he plants his position on "Only A Customer" the price tags have no meaning to the expensive flow. This soundtrack has the best of R&B and hip-hop/rap to be found. The upbeat tune of "Love For Free" featuring Jay-Z is laced with a simple chord of a piano that's easy to get into by Rell. Christion took it back with a 70's feel on "Pimp This Love". Jay-Z, Ja Rule & DMX teamed up as Murder Inc. for the killer "Murdergram". The love song or anti-love song, "Crazy" by Usual Suspects, sneak up for addiction. "Thugs R Us" has this roll type feel to it as DJ Clue features the lyrics of Noreaga. The closure of "Celebration (Team Roc)" ends on such a high note featuring Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, Sauce Money & Wais on this more of an introduction to what's to come.

Jay-Z gets a ton of credit and rightfully so but this one fell through the cracks. I was happy to find this on Amazon as I had been searching for the song In My Lifetime for many years after hearing during the credits of the movie "Bullet" starring Mickey Rourke and 2pac. I then was even happier once I heard the whole album it's no joke! I guess because this was marketed as a soundtrack and not a Jay-Z album it went a lot less noticed but it essentially is a Jay-Z album with good backing from several artists such as Noreaga and Murder Inc. It's Alright and obviously In My Lifetime are my favorites. So if you are or know Jay-Z fans spread the word on this one you won't be sorry...

The Rell joint is phenomenal... Jay Z massacred everything he touched. Yet... everything submitted after SIW makes the soundtrack sort of average...

Jay Z is the real entertainer as we know...he is on the cover and is the promoter here. He shines when he is on the mic, but the others do get showcased being connected with him.

One of the most gifted MCs to emerge in the mid-to-late 90s (along with DMX, Canibus, John Forte, Big Pun, and Mic Geronimo), Jay-Z is truly a force to be reckoned with. He's outlived all but a few of his contemporaries in terms of relevancy and unlike most of them, is even more potent a force in pop culture now than he was during hip hop's "Golden Era". You can't knock the man's flow or his hustle. The talented Mr. Carter was always bent on being bigger than music. Along with clothing lines, basketball teams, and production, one of his side projects was straight-to-dvd hood films, and this is the soundtrack to one of them. It features work from Jay himself, other established rappers, and some Roc-A-Fella acts it seems the company was trying to break with this disc. Of course the subject matter is standard "gangster" stuff: drugs, guns, etc., but as usual, Jay's superlative lyricism makes this more palatable than it is in the hands of less charismatic artists. Jigga is certainly featured prominently on the album, contributing the following cuts:

"It's Alright" (with protege Memphis Bleek) which samples the Talking Heads classic "Once in a Lifetime".

A Jaz-O remix of "In My Lifetime", the single which put Jay on the map before he had a major label record deal.

And the scorching "Murdergram" with gruff-voiced peers DMX (whose verse is classic) and Ja Rule.

Along with these standouts, Jay also brings his usual fire with "Only a Customer" and "Love for Free" (with singer Rell), and closes the album with "Celebration" (a posse cut with Sauce Money, Bleek, and Wais).

There are also contributions from established rappers like Noreaga and underground giants M.O.P. M.O.P.

For a soundtrack this is a pretty good album. It features a few different artists from Roc-a-Fella records. If you're a Jay-z fan you will like this album, it has a couple tracks that weren't released on anyother album.
