From Booklist
Each of the eight "phases" comprises 500 years of history. Chapter 1, for instance, chronicles the period from Abraham to Moses--the time of the patriarchs. Subsequent chapters record the eras from Moses to David (the birth of a nation), from David to Ezra (the period of prophets and kings), from Ezra to Hillel (an era of leading scholars), from Hillel to the completion of the Talmud, from Rav Ashi to Rashi (the era of the Geonim), from Rashi to Rabbi Joseph Karo (the period of the Rishonim), and the period from Karo (1488-1575) to the present. The authors posit that the Jewish people, Judaism, and the Holy Land share a symbiotic relationship that can be "traced like a golden thread running through Jewish history." Another recurring theme, they point out, is anti-Semitism throughout the ages. With a foreword by Martin Gilbert, this absorbing narrative, thoroughly researched and lucidly written, chronicles the economic, political, and social forces involved and discusses the foremost personalities through the ages.
