5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, only outdone by the sequel.
I love this game. I played it a zillion times during Spring 1993 with my friend Andrew. I used to play Axel or Blaze and he would be Adam. There are 8 levels to work thru in a run-down and corrupt city led by the evil Mr Big. Beating up all the bad guys and the end-of-level boss is much fun. Level 4 (The Bridge) was my fave because you could chuck baddies down the holes...

1.0 out of 5 stars Rough Start
This game is pretty week. I came to it after I played Streets of Rage 2. The graphics are sub-par and it is hard in a way that is just frustrating. The later games in the series made the action smooth and quick, here the action is clunky and frustrating. Just trying to hit the weakest enemy is a task, not to mention that the gymnast bosses on the boat level are so...

Level 4 (The Bridge) was my fave because you could chuck baddies down the holes into the river.

It also had truly fantastic music. The composer Yuzo Koshiro did absolue miracles with the limited technology of the Sega Genesis. The main theme, Level One, Level 4 and Final Boss are standout tunes.

I wish Sega would do PC version of the SOR games. It's not fair that only people with a Genesis can still play this game. I would love to own this again. It would be in my computer permanently.

4.0 out of 5 stars great fighting game, but not the best of the series, April 9, 2000

I have all 3 of the Streets of Rage games for the Sega Genesis and all of them are great. This one is pretty good, but it's not anything compared to Streets of Rage 2 or 3. Streets of Rage 2 is the best fighting game I've ever played. This one, like the other 2 has good replay value. It can easily be beaten in one sitting, but it's good enough to keep you wanting to beat it over and over again.

This is a great game and it would be a good pickup, but if you buy any of the "Streets of Rage" games, the best one to get is Streets of Rage 2.

OH my god this is the best game. All of the Streets of Rage games are excellent, and to own the one that started it all is an honor. I have this game and Streets of Rage 3 and let me tell you. If you like cute nice looking fighting games with strong cuddly caracters ... GO AND FIND YOURSELF A POKEMON ! . But if you're a serious gamer really looking for a classic butt kicking nerve wrecking, finger biting, wall climbing game. Buy this cartridge AND KICK SOME SYNDICATE BUTT !

SOR sets a ton of standards and holds up in 2009.

I recommend you get SOR2 on Xbox live arcade. You can find all SOR titles on the Sonic's Genesis Collection for Xbox 360.

try THAT out first.

5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Beat em up it's classic for GEN/MD owners, March 2, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Streets of Rage (Video Game)
Streets Of Rage is a classic beat em up just so fun back in 1989 there was this and there was Final Fight in the arcades. Basicly there's a criminal organization called the X syndicate the group leader is called Mr. X he turns out to be Washington senator George Xetheus who wants to President and you have 8 level 8 is HARD especially you have to fight all the bosses all over again but a couple of years later Streets Of Rage 2 would be released and put SOR 1 to shame.

This is another great game that came out during the early ninty's when Sega just released their Genesis platform. What can I say about this game? Great graphics, great music, great controls. Difficulty is not a problem it is adjustable to your skills! I usually play it on hard, just for the heck of it! My bro and I enjoy this game so much we play it all the time! (and he's 30yrs old!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Arcade Violence., July 13, 2006

This 2 player side scrolling beat 'em' up is a pure classic. You can choose up to 3 characters to play from knee flying Axel, fast kicking Adam and athletic Blaze. The story of the game is you play as 3 rogue cops who fight through the rough streets of New York to fight the criminal underworld.
The fighting in this game is very basic but perfect for the Sega Genesis controll pads. It was one of the first games on the Genesis where you can actually pick up weapons off the ground, and hit your enemies with them. Weapons included a baseball bat, a metal pipe, a knife (that you can also throw) and a beer bottle that can be used to smash over the enemies head and then stab them with it. The game also has a trancy 80's soundtrack and very humorous sound effects. Such as, enemies screaming, Axel shouting loudly when performing his famous flying knee kick, women screeching and glass bottles being smashed over goons heads. This is a very fun game to play, even better with a friend. This was one of my favourite games when I was young (and still is today), which I have cleared about 30 times. For me it brings back a lot of childhood memories

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, March 13, 2005
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Streets of Rage (Video Game)
This is an arcade game for the megadrive which is on a cartridge which has six games to it, thus is one of them, I rememeber playing this with my brother ages ago I used to play as Adam and he was Axl or Blaze. There isn't many moves except punch, kick, throw, german suplex and weapon strike with various weapons. It was better ten years ago though before PS2 and whatnot. The levels are generally easy except the 5th one which I think is pretty hard, also the last one is because you have you fight all the bosses and then the main boss. Like I said before this was good back in the dayz, but is good for a play every now and then.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, instant classic, April 18, 2004
This review is from: Streets of Rage (Video Game)
This Final Fight wannabe is of the lowest quality -- graphically and otherwise -- out of the three Streets of Rage games that were made for the Genesis, but it still has stout gameplay. You play a white guy, a black guy, or a woman--depending upon which character you can identify with. The object is the same as it is for any such game: beat the crap out of the same three or four enemies that come at you without end, pick up steel pipes to bash opponents, and eat food out of garbage cans to regain your strength. Finally, meet a tough boss at the end of each stage. Rinse and repeat. Overall, an enjoyable yet somewhat repetitive game.
