Book Description

March 1996
For 33 years, William Magnan walked the streets of St. Louis as a postal carrier. His natural curiosity about the names of streets and history of the city led him and his wife Marcella to write "The Streets of St. Louis".

With a historical narrative and comprehensive index of street names as well as a thorough appendix of state governors, city mayors and city schools, the Magnans show how the famous, infamous and unknown have left their marks on the city with a street sign.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great book, October 22, 2010

I first found this book in the reference section of the library. Knowing I could not check it out I looked it up on AMAZON. I ordered my copy. Living in St. Louis all my life, I knew most of the street names. But how and why the got their names was a mystery. Not only have I learned about the names of the streets, I learned more history of the City of St. Louis. A BIG thanks to Marcella C and William B. Magnan, the ones that wrote the book, and all those who gave the info.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting bites of information, but not a meal, September 7, 2008

This review is from: The Streets of St. Louis (Paperback)
The Streets of St. Louis as a brief history of St. Louis viewed through the lens of the names of its streets. I found a lot of interesting anecdotes, but I think the "book" would be better served by a clickable website of street names. It is low on narrative but high on tidbits. It did foster a better connection with the city I know and love.
