Book Description

January 30, 2004
Deep in the Nazi empire, an Undergound has arisen in Poland. Braving constant persecution, secret agents such as Bronek Pietraszewicz sabotage the Nazi war machine and assassinate Nazi police thugs. But then SS Brigadier General Franz Kutschera arrives in Warsaw, bringing with him a new kind of terror. For months, he arrests and executes thousands of civilians. Finally young Bronek is given the mission: assassinate General Kutschera. But to carry out his mission, Bronek must be willing to sacrifice everything he treasures. Now updated and expanded with two extensively researched historical appendixes, and a large bibliography for further research.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nearly forgotten espisode in the World War II struggle, October 30, 2004
This review is from: Streets of Warsaw: A Novel of the Polish Resistance in World War II (Perfect Paperback)
Streets Of Warsaw: A Novel Of The Polish Resistance In World War II is a historical novel and a totally engaging dramatization of a nearly forgotten espisode in the World War II struggle of the Polish underground against the German occupation. Chronicling the efforts of a valiant few to sabotage the Nazi war machine, the ruthless terrorizing and murder of an SS Brigadier General assigned to root out and destroy the uprising, and one man's desperate mission that could cost him everything he loves, Streets Of Warsaw is a gripping saga that tells of paying the ultimate price. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping and Well-Researched Historical Fiction, October 27, 2008
This review is from: Streets of Warsaw: A Novel of the Polish Resistance in World War II (Perfect Paperback)
I recently read a novel called The Master Planets (the kind of book you hate to finish -- HIGHLY recommended), and wanted to know more about the Polish resistance. Although I primarily sought non-fiction books, this one caught my attention, so I included it in my reading. Turns out it was an excellent choice!

This book is a fine example of how good historical fiction can be just plain good history. Secret agent Bronek Pietraszewicz takes part in actions that the real Polish resisters really DID perform during WW II. Heart-stopping and heart-rending, the descriptions of the Poles' courage in the face of terrifying brutality will make you think about your own capacity to confront the worst. This, in my opinion, is just one of the many lessons we SHOULD learn from history (although we so often don't).

This book is is more than a great story and a great "course" in world history. It is also a quite inspirational testament to the human spirit. Well worth reading!

This review is from: Streets of Warsaw: A Novel of the Polish Resistance in World War II (Perfect Paperback)
This is a fictional account of the intrepid Polish Resistance against the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. It's a simple account of one heroic resistance fighter, his incredibly touching love affair, and some gripping, almost unbearably tense encounters with various arms of the Nazi establishment. The book sheds a much-needed light on the Nazi depredations against the Poles, especially the mass executions at various intersections throughout the embattled city. There is glory in this story but there is also the sadness which comes with a brutal occupation by sub-human forces. This story has it all. Occupation up close and personal and the heroes who fought back with all they had. Wiggins has created a masterpiece.
