As a former professional singer/dancer, one of my hobbies is collecting show recordings. I'm presently in the process of replacing my favourite vinyls with CD's and I search for rare material as well. I came across "The Streets of New York" which I saw, many years ago, and noticed that one of the singers was Tom Urich. We appeared together in a production of "Little Mary Sunshine" where he played Captain Jim and I was cast as Billy Jester. "Streets" has style, grace and humour... something missing from many contemporary shows, with the exception of the brilliant "Scarlet Pimpernel". The score which ranges from the syncopated "He'll Come To Me Crawling", the very funny "California" to the lyrical "If I May", is rich and varied. The original cast perform with enthusiasm and charm and you can feel that the production was a total joy. Sadly, Richard B. Chodosh who composed the music and Barry Alan Grael, who was responsible for the lyrics and book (he also portrayed the role of Badger), only collaborated on one more show called "Berlin is Mine". This was recently recorded in 1995. We should be grateful that the Council for Musical Theatre has made this recording available and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a great score!
