useful information,
By A Customer
This review is from: Streetwise Finance and Accounting: How to Keep Your Books and Manage Your Finances Without an MBA, a CPA, or a Ph.D. (Paperback)
As a banker, I have seen hundreds of small companies struggle with financial information and many fail to get the credit they might otherwise deserve by not being able to present timely and credible information. This book helps even the smallest and least financially sophisticated to grasp the fundamentals of financial control and reporting. It is a must read for any company owner who does not have an in house financial person or uses a computer generated accounting system rather than having a close working relationship with a CPA. It is a rather unexciting area of business, but one that must be mastered if a business is to succeed.

This review is from: Streetwise Finance and Accounting: How to Keep Your Books and Manage Your Finances Without an MBA, a CPA, or a Ph.D. (Paperback)
I have been in business for the past ten years and have never truly understood or cared about keeping good records. The book breaks down accounting into real life experiences, finally something that I can understand. It's a must read for all small business people and would recommend it to anyone considering going into business for themselves

delightful read! Light, fast paced retelling of fame, fate..,

December 27, 1999STREETWISE Review Not a technical book for the "numbers" person, but rather a practical guide to accounting and finance, which smoothed the way and made an enjoyable read of what I expected to be a tough assignment. See - although I've always been comfortable with numbers, they bore me! No monotonous - tedious - drudgery - no Sir! Caplan's book nicely manages to ease the task and lighten the load. I had fully expected to become bogged down in a tedious chore - what a delightful read! Light, fast paced retelling of fame, fate, foibles and perhaps (infamy) - This is one book you simply have to read! Caplan Makes the Dry & Murky Juicy & Clear!,
By K. Lawrence Kemp, Attorney, Bankruptcy Trustee (Western Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Streetwise Finance and Accounting: How to Keep Your Books and Manage Your Finances Without an MBA, a CPA, or a Ph.D. (Paperback)
Ms. Caplan makes a dry and murky subject meaningful and crystal clear. Her syntax is terse. She gets right to the point of demistifying accounting concepts and terms. Finance and Accounting empowers the small business owner to know enough about the financial side to recognize where the business is and where it can go.

The Numbers Tell The Story,
By C. C. Mantis "Exposed" (Seattle) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Streetwise Finance and Accounting: How to Keep Your Books and Manage Your Finances Without an MBA, a CPA, or a Ph.D. (Paperback)
When running your business you really need to run your numbers. Keeping on top of your cash flow, income statement, accounts receivable and other reports will make the difference between a well run business and one that's not.
I have always been a shoot-from-the-hip kind of guy when it comes to running my business until someone smarter than me keyed me into the numbers game. That is why my most important 'advisor' is my CPA and not my banker or attorney. The title claims I can keep my own books and manage my finances without an C.P.A. but I still like to use one to review and make sure I'm on track. Sort of like creating your own agreement, but having your attorney review it. I think most small business owners could really use a refresher course on finance and accounting. This is just the book for that. It's easier to read and understand than most and makes sense to me. Even if you are just thinking about starting a business - this should be one of your 'must study' topics. Get it --- read it --- follow it --- you won't be sorry!

I felt "streetwise" after reading this book. I think I learned a lot about what financial statements mean, but this book is POORLY copyedited. Mistakes abound.
